I'm 38 weeks and I'm experiencing a lot of back pain, spasms, and a lot of cramping. I heard a massage could help matters or put you into labor. Anyone have experience from this? Perks? Cons?
They're amazing! They feel great and are so relaxing. I can't think of any cons to getting a massage. I've never heard of anyone going into labor from getting a massage though I suppose when you're 38 weeks pregnant anything is possible!
The only thing I've heard about massage during pregnancy that could encourage/induce labor is some pressure points/reflexology points in your feet that should be avoided. That said, I've been getting a prenatal massage once every three weeks since 22w, and I LOVE it. So, I highly recommend them.

This is true, but a trained massage therapist will know what pressure points to avoid. Massages are wonderful - get one - they are the best!
I had one with my last pregnancy at 36 weeks and had horrible contractions all night that night. They didn't amount to anything, and I had dd 2 weeks later with no problems, but I didn't get another one because that night of contractions was awful. It could totally be a coincidence, but it's making me think twice about getting any this time.
I'm a licensed massage therapist. Just make sure you specify that you want a therapist who is trained in prenatal massage. They should prop you up when you're on your back and then do only side-lying positions (unless they have a special table with the belly cut out-although i don't recommend those as it's hard to get the fit right and can strain ligaments in your lower abdomen-sidelying is much better). They say to avoid the uterus point (located in the the space between your anklebone and achilles tendon). Get that massage mama!
I'm in the minority. I dislike prenatal massages. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE massages in general, but not when PG. I typically get deep tissue massages and they can't really do that while PG. It just doesn't feel the same and isn't relaxing for me.

I agree that getting a massage while pregnant is totally different than when not pregnant. I miss the deep tissue massage!! It is still amazing!

I still get deep tissue massage, and it has been super helpful in managing my back/hip/neck pain.

My spa doesn't do deep tissue if it's a prenatal massage.

I got a prenatal massage when I was just over 38 weeks pg with DS, and told my massage therapist not to worry about avoiding the pressure points, as I was full-term and baby was very low. I had the massage on a Friday and my water broke early Monday morning.
FWIW, at my last appointment the Monday before I had DS, my doctor told me she'd probably see me that upcoming weekend, since my cervix was really soft and DS was so low. She was very nearly right!
