Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Dropping Bottles

DS is almost 11.5 months.  He has slowly been dropping bottles on his own from about 9 months (doing 5 8oz bottles) to now (3 8 oz bottles).  He is trying to drop another bottle, and I don't know if I should just let him or encourage him to drink the third bottle.  He drinks the first 2 almost back to back in the morning, but then he doesn't really want another one.

DS eats 3 meals plus a snack of regular foods, no purees.

Any suggestions or thoughts?

Re: Dropping Bottles

  • He's so close to a year that I would think it's ok.  I never want to force my kids to eat, but I understand the concern of them not getting enough because dd doesn't eat much formula these days and ds who was always a big eater until about 2.5 pretty  much lives on air.

  • Rather then letting him have two back to back in the morning what if you space them out or cut down to two and offer more in the bottle to make up for the amount? Maybe do a morning and late afternoon, early evening? Or do three bottles, morning, afterrnoon, evening?
  • First of all, I think it's funny that our kids are almost the same age, and we're due a week apart! DS is down to 3 bottles, a morning after breakfsat, after his afternoon nap and bedtime. Last week I would offer him as much as he wants, but I ended up wasting a lot. If he's hungry he eats, if he's not he won't.

  • We are trying to work our LO off the bottle. He's drinking a lot of water these days! He's still on his baby food but we have been giving him table food to supplement his baby food rightfully so he prefers the table food over the baby food! LOL!
  • My ped said to be around 18 ounces of formula by 12 months, and transition to milk. Would you be able to give him some milk in a sippy for his third bottle time, or encourage him to drink it with his meals? Our son does about 15-18 ounces of formula in his 3 daily bottles (total over the day, usually 5-6 ounces at a time), then 2-4 ounces mixed in with his cereal. We just started switching some of this over to milk (bday in one week). Unless he drops the entire third bottle amount, it sounds like he is on an ok track. Esp if he is getting any formula or milk in/with his meals.
  • What does your pedi say?  Mine still wants DD getting at least 28 oz of BM (or formula) per day until she gets over 12 months
