For those who weaned the paci

I know, another paci post....

When you weaned them, did they start sucking their thumb in replacement?

They've basically weaned Callie of her paci at daycare...they don't give it to her for naps anymore...but she sucks her thumb instead. I still give it to her for naps and bedtime at home. I don't know what to do...I mean, what's the point in weaning if she's just going to suck her thumb? I think I'd rather her stick with the paci....thoughts?

Re: For those who weaned the paci

  • My first thought is that means she isn't ready to give up the paci. I would also prefer paci over finger because one you can take away

  • I agree with pp you can take the paci away. I would love to wean but dd2 has one and dd1 is always trying to steal it. So its a no go for a few more months.

Ditto this.  You can take away a paci, but a thumb is permanent (ideally that is).

I tend to agree. We still give it just for sleeping, but I am definitely thinking of stopping soon. I'm scared! She is sleeping so well finally (knock on wood), and I don't want to rock the boat

  • You may have seen in my post that we lasted until night 2 and gave it back when I caught her sucking her thumb.  I am not going to take away one habit to replace it with a (worse to me) new one.  She has been doing fine at nap not sucking her thumb so we are still not giving it to her for naps but she does get it at night time.  Once she understands a little better we will fully take it away.  My new goal is that it is gone when she turns 2.

Right now it has become a non-issue since it no longer leaves the house and its not like she has it in pictures or delaying her speech.  If she needs it to sooth her while sleeping so be it.

  • I tell patients all the time - better the paci than the thumb.  I would definitely keep her on the paci if it means she's switching to thumb sucking.  Its a much, much harder habit to break and is usually broken years later than the paci.

  • Thanks girls....you confirmed my initial thoughts. Smile
