C-sections

Fertility?

Good morning!

Question -- I had a c-section this past February, and do not plan to start to get pregnant again for another year. That said, I am concerned because a few people I talked to mentioned that it will be more difficult for me to get pregnant or stay pregnant since I had the section and have scar tissue. My doctor assured me this wouldn't be a problem, but I just wanted to put feelers out there with you ladies to see if you had any difficulties with future conceptions due to your c-sections.

Thanks!

Re: Fertility?

  • I've had 3 c sections, due to have a 4th, and I can honestly say it didn't affect my fertility at all.  I've also thankfully never knowingly had a miscarriage or stillbirth.  The baby on the way was a surprise and happened while I was still nursing and hadn't regained a regular cycle.  The only thing they recommended to me was to wait at least a year, preferably 18 months in between conceiving to give your body a chance to heal.

  • I had absolutely no issue.  We got pregnant my first cycle with both of our kids, so the c/s didn't affect anything for me.

This is the same for me too. My 4th c-section is next week. My first 3 kids are all 1.5 years apart and I've gotten PG while EBF.

    GL to you!

  • I would go with your doctor's advice on this one, and not a friend's. I have never heard of a correlation between fertility and previous c-sections.

  • Not at all.  I had an initial c/s for a late loss and then went on to have 2 successful pg.  I got pg both times on the first try.  Both pregnancies were relatively uneventful but the first of the 2 I did go into labor a week before my scheduled c/s and did have a suspected abruption for reason unknown (working on my feet 11 hours a day, pregnancies too close together, placenta issues in general ???).  The second (thank goodness) was the most boring uneventful pg ever which is exactly what I needed.  Bottom line I had 3 pg in 4 years w/ 3 c/s.

  • Who ever said that maybe had problems getting pregnant again and just needed to blame something, and picked the c/s to blame.  I had a c/s on June 20, 09 and got the BFP september 28, 09 for my 2nd.  They are 11 months apart.  It was definitely not planned, but it happened and now they're best friends.  Anyways.. my point is i got pregnant right after my 6 week appointment... no fertility issues... now i'm on my 3rd.  :)

  • I've had 3 sections, and have never had a problem getting pregnant. In fact, it's been quicker each time -- DS1 was 3 cycles, DS2 was 2, and DD only was 1.

     Good luck!

  • Thanks so much ladies!

Again, I'm not looking to try again until next year-ish, but it's been a source of anxiety for me for a while... You have all made me feel much better :)

  • While I did experience a m/c after my c-section, I don't think that having had a c-section had anything to do with it at all.

I had no problems conceiving whatsoever, I just had two that didn't stick.  Then, this one has been absolutely fine thus far.

  • I had DD by c section (unplanned) after over a year of fertility treatment.  It took us one round to get pg with DS a year later.  He was a twin but we lost baby B early on and it was not attributed to anything specific
