July 2011 Moms

Ugh... Having to waste tons of milk.

I have an enormous supply of frozen breastmilk. I started pumping before I went back to work, then pretty consistently pumped more than DD would eat. Then a couple months ago she decided she wouldn't drink milk from anything besides the boob. (we do have her drinking some WCM from a sippy now, and she loves it in cereal). So I'm left with this chest freezer stuffed full of frozen milk. I submitted an application to a donation agency, and they rejected me because I took Claritin daily while I was pumping. They suggested one other place to contact that may have less strict guidelines, because they supply milk to term infants too, not only preemies. But the name of that agency triggered my memory as being one that sells the milk for outrageous prices and denies people who can't pay for it. :-/

I'm mainly just venting... I know I'll eventually end up throwing it out, but I hate the thought of wasting so much milk!!

  • Could you find another outlet to donate through? I Googled "donating breastmilk," and quite a few reputable-looking sites popped up. Might be worth a try!

  • You can donate to needy moms directly through FB.  Look for Human Milk 4 Human Babies........or Eats on Feets.  You can either post what you have and moms will contact you, or you can look at the posts and choose a mom to donate to.  Some will require you to get some blood work done (should be free through your insurance if you just note that it's for a donation).  There is no minimum either, so you can donate as much or as little as you're comfortable with.  Good luck!

This - I'd try both those FB groups (they have local pages) before tossing it. Hopefully you can help someone who needs the milk :)

  • You might want to page AmandaP678 on here. I know she just donated a bunch of milk and she was on medication.

  • Oh yes, please look into Human Milk 4 Human Babies and Eats on Feets.  There are lots of mommies out there who would love some wholesome breastmilk for their babies, but can't afford the astronomical prices of a milk bank.  I pumped and donated just over 1000 ounces through them and then another 1000 privately to my Goddaughter and you can't believe the appreciation!
