I'm really debating getting a Wii---I've wanted one for a couple years but DH hasn't quite picked up on my hints (LOL)--so I think I may splurge and get one for myself. But I truly know nothing about these things---or even if Wii is the best for the fitness thing??? I'm not in to the traditional video games much--and don't really want the kids playing those either for right now--although wouldn't mind playing some of the sports games with them (especially over the winter months).
So do you recommend it? If so, which one---Wii, xbox?? Why? What exactly do you need for it to use it for fitness? Any other tips/suggestions? I saw Target had one on sale--although it's not the fitness one.

Re: Anyone use a Wii (or other game console) for fitness?
Nintendo will be coming out with a new system this fall called WiiU. Not sure on the cost or really that much about it.
But I like Wii for our family, I find it to have the most family friendly games, and some nights we play with our older kids for family game night. It is quite fun and can get competitive.
I like the Wii for fitness, I have a Jillian Michaels one, two Wii fit ones and a couple of Zumba ones. I got some good workouts out of them. My DS often dances with me to the Zumba ones.
Need a laugh? My Blog to the rescue!
We have the playstation with Kinect, and I disagee with the prior poster that it won't get you in shape. The kinect is the one where your body is the controller. I have Fitness 2012. It is awesome. It has regular workouts, dance workouts, yoga etc. It is wonderful. Husband and I both use it. The thing is that you have to use it. The extra nice thing about the kinect is that it will tell you on screen if you are in the right position or not for the workout, which is awesome with the dance and yoga workouts.
We also got the Star Wars game as that it has a whole section with dancing on it. You would be surprised how much of a workout you get while doing those dances.
The fitness 2012 tracks calories burned, questions you as to your fitness goals and flags the exercises which will help you attain those goals.
We got a Wii a few years ago partially for this reason and partially because DH was jonesing for a console system. Kinect wasn't out at the time, or we may have considered that. I wouldn't bother with the Wii Fit if you go with the Wii, I feel like there are many other much better "games" out there with the fitness goal. I felt like Wii fit gave rewards very quickly in the beginning and then there was nothing left for the "game". I know. Getting in better shape should be it's own reward. If that was enough for me, I'd be doing push ups now instead of bumping! We have a Gold's Gym boxing game that I love. I feel like it pushes me better, grows with me and rewards me.
All that being said, keep in mind this is like the video tapes/DVDs we've all bought at some time. It does no good if you don't use it. If you are using it though, it takes you through exercises you could be doing at home anyway, but has a game wrapped around it.
I have the wii and a couple of fitness games and the wii fit board. I used to use it to "work out" But i felt like it was a joke honestly lol. Its just not the same as the gym you know. I never saw any results. That being said if you do not work out at all, what so ever, it would probably do something for you.
We dont really use our wii for games anymore. I was obessed with mario for a while tho, haha. And we have a lot of old school games down loaded on it with the old school control which is pretty neat. But we use it daily for netflix. I would never give it up because of the netflix. Its so wonderful! We do have a ps3, but we dont use it for netflix, i dont really know why.. DH didnt want to down load it on there.
Anyway, the wii is super family friendly. My niece and nephews love it.
