Giving medicine?

Has anyone found an easy way to give their kids medicine?  DD1 has been a terror with medicine since she was teeny tiny.  When she was little, I could pin her down and shoot it in with the syringe and only had to worry about the part that ran back out.  Now if I try it, she spits it back out.  I even tried short term (I'll give you soda) and long term (we can go to grandma's house tomorrow) bribes, she said she would take it, took the syringe, decided it was gross and we got nowhere, except needing to change the jammie shirt.  Apparently they don't make the strips anymore and I couldn't find any chewables in either store I checked.  I guess I'm at least lucky that DD2 LOVES taking medicine (in fact, threw a fit that she didn't get to suck on the syringe Confused).

Re: Giving medicine?

  • I ask DS if he wants to take it on a spoon or a syringe. Then he gets the option to take it himself or have me do it. Or I mix it in yogurt.

  • We've tried a few things.  The best one, if the flavor can be masked, is giving it to her in a shot glass mixed w/ chocolate syrup and just calling it Daddy's Special Treat and initally pretending she couldn't have it.  Ahh reverse psychology!!

That didn't work the last time we had to give her medicine, but the nurse in the doctor's office had tried just giving her tons of praise and a promise of stickers and it worked, so I tried it at home and while it took FOREVER for her to take the dose, it did work.

  • Have the pharmacy flavor it and also ask if it can mixed with a little bit of juice or something else that will cover the yucky taste of the medication.  I also started working with my kids on swallowing pills about a year ago and its great as my 6 year old can swallow pills now and my 4 1/2 year old is not far behind.  The 6 year old takes an ADHD med daily which is why we started working on it and it has made life so much easier.  We practiced with M&M's and little mints.
