hours between BFing?

How many hours is your LO going in between breast feeding sessions?

I take her to work with me and I do ten hour days. There are sometimes when she only eats 2 times in that ten hours. Today she ate at 2:30 am, 6:00 am, she had a container of sweet potatoes at 10:30, then bf at 1:30 pm and now 6:00 pm. She may eat again at 8. At both the 1:30 and 6 feedings she wasn't acting hungry but it had been so long I just fed her. Usually she doesn't have a motn feeding and feeds at least 1 more time during my work day of 75:30.

I don't really get it. Could she really be getting enough? Should I just start feeding her every 3/4 hours? Should I call the doc? I just don't want her to not be getting enough.

ETA: she's been really fussy at feeding times. Pulling off a lot and when she's "done" and I try to burp her she gets really upset. I try to see if she wants more but I can hear she isn't getting anything and pulls off even more

Re: hours between BFing?

  • Have you weighed her recently? Does she still pee and poop regularly?

Since you don't give bottles, perhaps she is eating a lot from you at each feeding? They can be very efficient at it. Mine can empty a boob in 5 minutes now, its crazy.

She nurses at 1, 4 and 630 then hubby feeds her 3 x 5oz BM while I'm gone and she nurses at 6pm and 8pm. So still pretty much on the 3 hour or so schedule. But she hasn't had food yet so that will likely change things a bit.

  • I don't have a decent scale to weigh her on. Although her feedings have gotten longer than they used to be when she ate more often. I'll try to weigh her with my crappy scale lol

  • He has been stretching out his feedings on his own...they're now anywhere between 2.5-4.5 hours.  He's still wetting his diapers, but just not pooping as much because he's not eating as frequently, and I can only guess that whatever he's eating he's just storing and not eliminating, KWIM?  He eats at 7:30 before bed, and wakes up around 3 to eat, and then again around 7 when he's up for the day.  He hasn't started solids yet, but he seems fine- I mean, I feed him when he's hungry, and I know he's done when he starts to "play" on the boob...like he'll blow raspberries...or when he's just comfort nursing.  If your DD weren't getting enough, I think she would let you know.  If you feel like she is losing weight, or isn't making enough dirty diapers, then I would talk to your pedi.
  • In the 10 hours she was changed 3 times. She has been napping quiet a lot recently too. Her usual naps are between a half hour to an hour. She's been napping multiple hours too, so she's sleeping through her "regular" feeding times. I changed her both at 2 & 6 AM. And she needs to be changed now. So she's had 6 wet diapers today. I don't know what a good amount is at this point.

5-6 per day is good at this age.  I used this link:

  • My LO is still EBF and eats between 4 to 6 times a day. She is gaining plenty so I try not to worry on the 4 times only days.

  • Thanks ladies! You always make me feel more at ease when I'm worried about something!

  • I'm late to this, but can relate.  My DS2 hasn't been eating as much lately either.  He's plenty chunky and has enough wet diapers so I'm not worried.  I'm also a 2+ mum so I can understand your worry, I was worried when DS1 did the same thing!

Often I offer the boob at the 3 hour point and he nurses for about 2 minutes and then starts to play.  So, I guess, not hungry!  With DS1 it was just a phase and will pass.  For the record mine hasn't started solids yet except for the prunes I gave him this morning so he'll hopefully poo today:/
