Boston Babies

South Shore Hospital--Rants or Raves??

Hi all,

Just recently got a BFP for our 2nd child and while overjoyed, I'm also a bit shocked.  So anyways I had not really figured out where I wanted to have my 2nd child and now feel like I better hurry up and make a decision.  We live right on the Boston line and so part of me feels like I "should" go to BWH, however it's bizarrely difficult to find an affialiated Dr. anywhere convenient to me, so for now I'm with Crown OB GYN and they only deliver at SSH.  So I would love to hear from moms who have delivered there.   TIA!

PS  In case anyone's wondering I had our DD at NWH hospital and for a variety of reasons def won't be going back there.

Re: South Shore Hospital--Rants or Raves??

  • Hi breztobe, I don't have a story about delivering at SSH but I can tell you prenatal facilities that deliver at BWH in case you were still considering that. Harvard Vanguard has 15 locations that all deliver at BWH, here is link to see their locations https://www.harvardvanguard.org/locs/services2.asp?dpt=Obstetrics/Gynecology and New England OB/Gyn Associates https://www.neobgyn.org/ delivers at BWH.

I hope that helps a bit! I work at a website, www.mynewmd.com, that tries to make the search for pregnancy care easier and I just pulled that information out of our database.

    Good luck!

  • I am pregnant with my second and will be delivering this baby, as I did my DD, at SSH.  I had a great experience--and actually spent three weeks inpatient with preeclampsia before I delivered.  Their maternity/NICU is great.
  • Thanks for the info ladies.  I was beginning to think noone was going to respond! Jackigan, don't be nervous.  I didn't have a great experience but it also wasn't awful and to be honest I would still recommend NWH. I just also recommend being assertive.  Don't be shy to ask for what you want/ need and even for a different nurse if you don't feel comfortable.  I loved the L&D nurses but the post-partum care was spotty, which I think can be true anywhere and now I'll just be sure to be more assertive no matter where I go.  Our biggest issue was that our DD was born a few weeks premature and I do not feel that NWH properly prepared us for the special needs of our preemie, rather we were handed a packet of written material to read and told how good she was doing for someone her size, etc.  We then ended up in Children's NICU 2 days after we came home.  I wrote a letter about our experience that I sent with the survey they sent home and have to say that I very quickly received a call from the nurse manager who couldn't have been nicer and apologized for the issues we encountered.  Hope that eases your mind some.  I have heard many, many raves about the hosp and actually know one of the L&D nurses personally, so I'm sure all will be good for you there.
  • I go to Crown OB/GYN as well and delivered DS at SSH. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about SSH Maternity and NICU staff. I was inducted...twice! I had great nurses taking care of me and taking care of my DS when he had to stay in the special care nursery for 9 days. DH and I actually boarded at the hospital untill DS was ready to come home and even though I was technically discharged, the Maternity staff was still so wonderful to us. They even took care of DH one night when he wasn't feeling so good.

  • Oh, thanks so much for posting this!  It really makes me feel better b/c I am going to Crown too and have decided to stay there and deliver at SSH.  Thanks again for the input!
  • I just delivered at SSH a week ago. All of the nurses were awesome and even though I had a very difficult induction experience, I was very happy with the care I received throughout. I felt that my baby and I both had great experiences.

  • I had a wonderful experience at SSH. I was admitted to the antinatal unit at 33.1w for preterm labor and I can't praise the nursing staff enough.  I ended up delivering early at 33.4w, and again, the entire staff was fantastic.  They prepared me for what would happen with my baby once I delivered.  The NICU and special care nurses were wonderful during my daughters 2 week stay.

That being said, I also had a late loss last year, where I was induced and delivered at BWH.  They were amazing as well.  We chose SSH this time around simply due to location.
