Has anyone started baby-wearing late in the game? (I have a million ?s)

I havent baby-worn for a few reasons- mostly because I had all the time in the world to snuggle my LO, but now Im back to work and busier. He's also much more interested in sitting up and being held all the time then before.

He does ok in his crappy carrier depending on his mood, but I really think he would do well in a more comfortable one.

So I want to get all fancy and get a nice one but I don't even know if he'll like it and he's already 3 months. Im a pretty solid chick and I can handle the weight, but how long do you usually baby-wear for? Is it worth it to get it this late? Money is a factor, but Im craving that closeness when Im running around the house, so it's not a huge factor.

I see things on pinterest about making your own wrap but is that better for little babies? Have you had luck with making your own?

  • You've got loads of time!  Really you can baby wear for as long as you and kiddo want (just think how long you use a stroller for!).

My siggy link has some info that might help you get started in terms of figuring out what type of carrier you want (there's some DIY info in there as well).

You might also see if you have a baby wearing group near you so y'all could try out some different types to see what suits you best!

  • 3 months isn't late in the game - I thought your baby would be over a year to say it's a "late start".

We still use our carriers. DS and I were at the farmer's market on Saturday and he was very happy in the Ergo.

  • We didn't babywear a lot in the earlier months--at those ages LO would rather be in the carseat when we went out or in the swing at home. We started doing it a lot more at around the 5 month mark. At 20 months we're still babywearing everyday. If you plan on more kids, I definitely think it's worth the investment.

  • I didn't start BWing until DD was 9mos and still didn't do it often since.  I would not consider 3mos late.  I'm definitely planning to wear the new LO much more since I'll have a toddler to keep up with and DH just deployed.

Currently going through our second deployment. Can't wait for Zoe to meet her daddy!

  • I just started wearing DD like a month ago so if you are late, then I am really late. We have an Ergo and love it.

  • Cool! I thought I was late to the party. Doing my research.

I swear I saw something that alot of mamas dont wear after their babies are crawling- glad to hear it's do-able much later

  • DD didn't like being carried until she could be on my back - around 6mo.  Oh, we tried, but it was mostly hit or miss.  Once she could go on my back, she'd be on there for an hour at a time, often, mostly for walks or when I was training the dog.

I still wear DD, but she doesn't like wraps anymore (and I have four!), but instead we use a toddler-sized soft-structured carrier (that's half buckle, have tie).

  • We started using an Ergo at 4 months and I used it a lot until he started walking at 9 months. We occasionally use it to go hiking using a back carry, but he really fights being worn so we usually let him walk.

However, at 1.5 years old and 25 lbs, he is perfectly comfortable to wear in both positions. If he tolerated it, I'd use it all the time.

  • I used a crappy Bjorn in the beginning with DD, and then bought an Ergo when she was about 4-5 months old, and we used it constantly until she was about 1.5 years old, and then rarely after that. I absolutely loved carrying her in the Ergo, it didn't hurt my back at all and was a nice way to snuggle her while out running errands.
