Does your DS sit or stand?

Da still sits to pee he's been potty trained since January. I'm just wondering what's most common among little boys to see if we should be showing him how to stand. Fwiw, we just finally got him transitioned to using just the toilet instead of his potty ring on the toilet!!
If your LO sits still when will you introduce standing up?

Re: Does your DS sit or stand?

  • I never pushed it but his PS teacher got on my case about it last year.  But it was a pain b/c he always made a mess on the potty seat.  I introduced/encouraged/pleaded right around your DS's age when I ditched the last potty seat in the house.

  • We PTed back in March and they've just recently started getting into peeing standing up.

  • I have three boys, I always encourage sitting and reminding them to point it down too! My 6yr and 4yr old can stand and pee and reach the potty just fine, but I don't like it! Just kidding. It depends on the size of the potty, but I do think it is helpful to be able to stand in certain situations when out... like in the woods! They stand if they can reach and point! My almost 3 yr old is not there yet, he has been potty trained for 9 months, and has no interest in standing.

  • DS stands, and started doing it on his own about a month after being PT.  He never really liked other toilets, and while at his cousins house he wouldn't sit, so MIL had him stand.  He's been doing it ever since.  DS also watched DH go to the bathroom too...so maybe that also helped.  Why not try it and see if he likes it?  It is messier, just because they don't aim well, but he's good at it now.

  • He's been PTed for 2 years but he still sits. He can't quite arc it well enough to not make a giant mess.

  • Both boys started sitting but as soon as they were tall enough to pee standing up, they stood up to pee.

DS2 had a poo regression when the standing started.  Good times.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • DS didn't potty train until 3y1m, so he was older than your DS.  We taught him sitting, but a week later he "taught himself" standing during quiet time one afternoon.  So, we taught him how to aim and he has been standing ever since.

  • DS has always taken off his undies, pants, and sat down. About a month ago we started working on standing so he was ready for preschool.

  • Mine does a little of both, he usually sits but sometimes he thinks he is a "bigger" boy when he goes standing up.

  • DS poops a lot, so it seems helpful that he is always sitting. He has peed a couple of times standing up, but he doesnt seem to prefer it.

  • When potty training DS would stand at daycare and sit at home. We didnt know he stood and daycare didn't know he sat until it came out one day because he had a poop accident at daycare because he was standing. We assume he saw a friend stand since we never taught him. Sorry cant be helpful.

  • DS learned to pee standing right at 3 1/2. I don't think I would have trusted him sooner. He had only recently discovered that pointing it down while on his potty made it splash less. Before that, I think I would have been scrubbing walls several times a day.
  • He has been able to pee standing since the beginning (so 2.5 if not a bit earlier).  But only recently have we pushed him to pee standing at the big potty vs. sitting on the little potty (which is only out in case Eleanor wants to give it a go).

I just wish girls could pee standing easily ...would make public pottying and pottying on the fly easier ;)

  • mine have always stood. my bathroom is a mess. :P

  • Sits most of the time, stands in public restrooms when going with DH.  (I probably shouldn't share this but DH sits at home too so that plays a big part in it.  But my toilet stays much cleaner!)
  • He learned standing.   We taught him to lean over the bowl and hold on to the back of the toilet.  It gives him the perfect angle for no mess.

This. We have a sturdy stool with rubber feet that doesn't slip. He stands on it, holds onto the back of the toilet and pees. About 50% of the time. No mess.
