Birth Center Recs?

Hi All,

I am moving from Eastern Washington back to the west side (thank god!!!) But that means abandoning the birthcenter I love love love! Anyone have any birth centers they could recommend (and by that I mean, you have your baby with midwifes but it is at a place...

Re: Birth Center Recs?

  • I have not used it personally, but I had several co-workers who were very happy with the birth center and midwives through Evergreen Hospital in Kirkland. You may want to look in to that if it's close to where you will be!

  • If you are looking for freestanding birth centers with Licensed Midwives not nurses, your options in Seattle area are: Center for Birth, Seattle Home Maternity, and Seattle Naturopath and Birth Center in Madison Valley. Eastside there are Puget Sound Birth Center and Eastside Birth Center. There are a few more further north and south. Probably best to see what your insurance covers and choose a midwife you like first. Some go to any birth center others see patients/catch babies at only 1. Probably more options than in EWA. Good luck.
  • It kind of depends on where you will be. We are on the South end and we are planning on delivering at The Birthing Inn in Tacoma for our next baby. I have also heard great things about Lakeside Birthing Center in Lake Tapps. I have read great things about The Center for Birth but it's too far for us.

  • Swedish Ballard Family Childbirth Center also does midwives and has a warm feel...attached to the hospital. Delivered my first there naturally, with a family doc...the nurses were awesome!

  • I had a bad experience with the Cascade Birth Center in Everett, and when I was dealing with the emotions of it and my miscarriage, the midwife I spoke with at Puget Sound Birth Center, was so kind and comforting. Just from her phone call alone, I'd recommend them. I delivered with the Providence Midwives in Everett, and I loved that experience. They were caring and knowledgable. I hope you find a good fit with someone.

  • Welcome back! I gave birth at Puget Sound Birth Center, and it was fine. Very nice set up, biggest drawback is only one of the three rooms has a shower, and the shower was my SAVIOR. I would have been in it my whole labor, but for the first 6 hours I was there it was dirty from a previous birth.

I did not use PSBC's midwives, though, I used Fremont Midwifery and I cannot recommend them highly enough! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Geraldine and Tracy!

I was originally with Eastside Midwifery, but we weren't a good fit. They're perfectly competent, but a little more prescriptive than I liked.

Best advice is to interview midwives. There are a TON out here, and most can go to different birth centers even if they don't have their own. Good luck!

I am going to CBC and so far I love it (25 weeks), I would be curious to hear more about your bad experience, just for educational purposes.  You could PM me if you felt more comfortable sharing that way.

    Thanks

  • I was in the same boat! Moved from Spokane Valley and had an amazing doctor there that I loved :)  Where on the West side are you moving?  I'm in Queen Anne so I'm looking at switching to Swedish Ballard.  I've heard a lot of good things.  Good luck with your move and your search!

  • I used Puget Sound Midwives for my birth, selecting the Eastside Midwives (because of insurance options) as my team and it was just so so. I loved the prenatal care aspect but the actual birth would make me not recommend them. They had taken on too many clients and during my labor the midwife on call had to deal with two laboring women at the clinic but was on the phone with another woman who was threatening to rupture her waters. So I had a student midwife with me the whole time who I had met but once before, she was nice but I felt slightly abandoned (I didn't know why till way after the fact what was going on) but I didn't receive much guidance or suggestions what I could do during labor (baby was sideways). Needless to say I had to transfer to the hospital to deliver. My friends used Lake Washington midwives and I think they were awesome though!
