my mom came to visit today and she's not familiar with our gas stove. I taught her how to turn it on and off but guess she wasn't paying attention. We finished lunch, while I was cleaning up I noticed the gas stove she used wasn't shut off. The stove didn't have a flame but it was left on medium heat. I'm guessing it was left on like that for an hour or so. Now that my paranoia has kicked in. I was in the kitchen this entire time so it's likely I've breathed in much of the gas. My concern is if this is harmful to the baby. anyone familiar with this?
I have opened all windows and turned on a fan to help disperse the gas since I found out. I know I should've checked the stove myself...
Re: forgot to turn off the gas stove
I'm surprised you didn't smell the gas. Very dangerous if indeed the stove was leaking gas for that period of time.
In all honesty, how did you know the gas was left on? Just by the position of the dial? (I have gas in my house as well and I can't figure out how the gas could be left on without the burner also being on)
This. You'd be able to smell it if it was really leaking that long. Strange that it wasn't lit anymore though. Maybe your mom had turned it off at one point, tried to turn it back on, and bypassed the "light" setting. But then you would've heard and smelled the gas. Hmm.
SLHurst, that's exact what happened. She didn't know which way to turn to shut it off so she was fiddling around with it. She somehow ended up bypassing the ignite setting and left it on medium by accident. She said since she didn't see a flame she assume that was off (she's never used a gas stove in her life. I really regret the fact I didn't watch over her closely
. I could smell a bit of the gas when I was in the kitchen cleaning up but it wasn't very strong. Probably it helps the sliding door next to the kitchen was open (not completely open though). If the gas smell is not very strong, then I don't need to worry as much right?
Does anyone know of some sort of detector that I can install in the kitchen to prevent similar future event from happening? We have a carbon monoxide detector in the house but I researched, it won't detect natural gas.
I am also surprised you didn't smell it. If you didn't feel light headed or nauseous you should be fine. Do a kick count, keep your hydration up. When in doubt call your doc and see what they say.
LFAF Summer 2016 Awards:
thanks everyone! yes I've opened every window in the house and have turned on a portable fan in the kitchen. So far neither my mom nor I have any symptoms and I'll need to run an errand soon so I'll get some fresh air as well. Looking back, good thing I found out when I did. Had I left the house and do my errand right after lunch, it could've turned out a lot worse *shudder*. I've "banned" my mom from using the stove without my supervision until I'm confident she knows how to use the stove correctly.
