We went to the dentist on Friday and he had a cavity. I was so bummed. We brush regularly, limit sugar and take good care of his teeth. The cavity went well until the filling -- for whatever reason he just FREAKED out. We got it done, but it was tough.
Anyone else's kiddo have a cavity at such a young age? I'm waiting for a call back from the dentist, but other than brushing w/fluoride toothpaste, limiting sugar, flossing...what can we do?
Re: DS had a cavity
I don't, but I have a friend whose child needed several fillings after his first dentist visit at around that age.
Some kids are just prone to them.
We'e been cavity free so far. Fingers crossed! BUT...
DH and I are both very cavity prone with super weak enamel, so we were very proactive with DS's teeth. His pedi dentist told us that it's not that unusual and aside from all the things you are already doing, he recommended drinking lots water, particularly in the afternoon and early evening and a third brushing session. DS brushes in the AM, after his afternoon snack and before bed. It's torturous, but what can you do?
My daughter also had a cavity, back in June. I gave the dentist a general run down of her diet and our brushing schedule and we determined that she's probably just more prone to them and now we're a bit more vigilant about brushing/flossing. The dentist did recommend an enamel streghthening toothpast called, MI Paste, but it's $36 for a tube and I haven't been able to bring myself to pay that much for something I'm pretty sure my daughter's going to hate having put on her teeth...
We brush every night with a flouride toothpaste and we floss every night. I try my best to be careful with sugar, but she does still get a treat probably once a day or so. So far, I haven't noticed any other discolorations, but I'm certainly nervous about the possibility of more cavities.
I beat myself up for awhile after DD's cavity, but I've since come to accept that there wasn't much I could do about the one she did have and other than brushing, flossing and taking general care of her teeth, there's not a whole lot I can do to prevent more cavities. I'm just hoping that her adult teeth end up being healthier than her baby teeth.
I'd love to have this sort of brushing routine, but it's not possible, since DD is in daycare. We sometimes manage to get a quick toothbrushing in the morning, but generally her only brushing is at night.
