FB friends with preschool teacher?

So we enrolled DD1 into a preschool at the local private school.  We had parent teacher night the other night.  There were 10 other parents there and we just sat in a circle and asked questions and talked about concerns with our new preschoolers.  One parent asked about parent teacher communication.  She figured it would be difficult for the teacher if every parent (14 kids in DD's class) wanted to stay after class and talk to the teacher about how their kid did that day, every day.  So how often would we get an update on how our child was doing and what would be the best way to contact her?  The teacher said that if there is a concern, she will ask to speak to the parent when they pick up or if the parent has a concern, they can stay after to speak to her.  If there are no concerns, she plans to update parents each weekend about how their kids did that week via e-mail.  But then she said she is on FB  and that we should friend her and that way, we can contact her at any time.  I like the idea of getting an e-mail each week about how DD is doing but the FB friends thing seemed kinda weird.  What do you ladies think?

Re: FB friends with preschool teacher?

  • An email would be appropriate, but FB is probably not professional. Unless she set up a private page for the class to share pictures/updates.

If its just her personal account, I would probably be her friend to see if she was talking trash or posting bad behavior., but I'm just nosy like that...

I was FB friends with the director at DDs old school, but that's just because I liked her as a friend. Nothing was ever discussed about school.

  • I personally do not look for my kid's teachers on FB, but if she invited me I would assume it was a professional account and not a "personal" one. DDs preschool teacher is a good friend of SILs and I won't friend her until the year is over because I feel like she should have an expectation of privacy..

  • I would assume that if she is inviting parents to be her fb friend then her profile is probably pretty professional.  I highly doubt she'd be posting pics of herself partying on the weekends, etc!  At least I'd hope not! LOL  She probably just offers this as another alternative b/c a lot of people check fb more than their email and it may be more convenient for them.

If you're not comfortable being fb friends then just stick to email.

  • I am friends on FB with some of my kids' PS teachers, past and present, as well as various board members who have since moved on to Kindy.  It is a co-op school and a very tight-knit community.  Now that I am on my 3rd year there, I see it's natural.  I have kind of toned down some of my political and personal views that I post, but I am certain every one of my friends appreciate that!  It is fine, I think, at the PS level.

  • I would assume that the account is professional, not personal. I would probably add her just to be nosy, though.

  • DD's last school was an in-home daycare and they had a private page that only allowed parents she accepted to be part of that page. I also liked it because they updated it with pictures from different projects they were working on.

I wouldn't have been cool with it if it wasn't private

  • IN the situation you are talking about, I think the FB thing is strange and I think emails would be the best way to communicate.  My older DD did her PreK class2x and my younger DD is now in the class - same teacher the whole time.  We are typically the 1st people to drop off and the lead teacher and I became very friendly and her DH is a handyman that we have used for a few projects including a new deck.  I know both of her girls as I saw them daily as well.  We did become friends on FB last year but never use it to talk school.  Work/school things stay over email or in person.  My older DD has some special needs so we had communicated a lot more than normal via email and phone and this year, with DD#2, none of that extra communication is needed but we still chat daily at drop off and over FB and even after this year, I will still want to keep in touch with her.  Her kids are great and as it will be 3 years after this year that we have been connected through my kids, I don't see the friendship just ending.  She is someone I trust and will go to for advice as her older DD has ADHD as does mine and we talk about the issues and stuff like that so I feel like it has gone way past just a teacher/parent relationship in many ways.  I would not friend a teacher normally unless that had a professional FB profile just for that purpose.
