Baby Names

Husband and I have very different tastes

I like older, unusual names, Millicent, Pearl, Agatha...etc.

DH likes McKayla, Kayla, Kendra even though his cousin who we see a lot is Kayla and it's a very popular name around here.

It's the same with boy names. I got away with naming DS Donald James because it's a family name, but finding something we both like, that goes with DS is not easy and ends in frustration.

Re: Husband and I have very different tastes

  • We have a similar problem: he likes very traditional common names, and I like names that are a bit rarer (but not weird). We have very little overlap. In fact, we talked girl names this weekend (we're team green) and between our two shortlists, we have one overlap, and it's at the bottom of both shortlists!

Our strategy at this stage is to chat about it and then leave it for a while. I keep expecting the baby to have an "obvious" name when we meet him/her.

  • DH and I were the same, but we eventually came to a decision. Just don't give up or get discouraged! Get each of you to compile a list of all the names you each like and then go through one another's and see if there's ANY you could get used to. Good luck!

  • DH and I are in the same boat. He likes very modern, short, trendy names and I like classic, longer names. After going through thousands we found maybe 10 we both liked well enough, and could only come up with 2 pairings we really like... If all else fails we'll flip a coin in the delivery room!

  • I'm right there with you!  Sometimes I wonder if we will ever agree on a name for our baby girl.  Boys' names were so much easier for us...

  • I agree that it stinks when DH is a name doofus ;).  IMHO, I have tasteful opinions about names and DH has blue-collar 80's taste in names.  Unfortunately, there's no getting past it.  You just have to keep thinking until you can come to common ground.
