Mold issues

Ugh, DH and I are so stupid.  We've been using a cool mist humidifier in Bishops room cause he has a dry stuffy nose and also cause it makes his room a bit cooler since he runs on the hot side.  Its on about 80% of the day and hes in there at night and for most of his naps.

Last week I noticed a funky smell coming from Bishops room and we thought it was from the mat the humidifier was on so we took it out.  The smell went away.  Then I noticed the smell again a day ago.  DH went to clean the humidifier right now and found mold in it.  We're so dumb and hadn't put two and two together.  So all this time Bishops been breathing in mold?  Can he get super sick from it?  If he hasn't gotten sick yet, then is he in the clear?  How do we clean his room?  Just put all bedding and curtains in the laundry?  How about the carpet?  Walls?  Glider?  Since we've been in there and then been in the rest of the house, is everything contaminated?  DH thinks I'm going overboard but I don't want my kids getting sick.  =(  I feel so stupid and guilty.

TIA

Re: Mold issues

  • Unless you're allergic to mold, people only get really sick from black mold - the kind that grows over a long period of time in walls and junk. I'm sure its fine. If the room smells fine after you remove/fix the humidifier, then its fine. Mold/mildew stinks, so its a dead give away. If you're still concerned, wash what you can in hot water with vinegar and it'll kill whatever is there. Its a good practice every once in a while anyway.

  • I agree with OSC!

I wanted to add that our humidifier (Graco) has a filter, so we swap out the filter when it gets dingy & that's a good way to help prevent mold, etc.  So if it does become a situation where B gets sick, you may want to check a filtered type.

  • Thanks guys. I feel a smidge better but still might clean everything.

Bosha, I'll definitely look into a humidifier with a filter!
  • The cool mist ones are notorious for molding!!!  Grumble grumble.  You have to empty it pretty much every day & get it cleaned & dried out.  We have have several mold because we forgot & didn't do it for 3 days.

DH will NOT use it again after it molds.  He says he doesn't feel comfortable using moldy plastic.  He's the same way with Tupperware too.

We have never had a problem with the warm mist ones, and we just use that instead now.  She's in her crib (or our bed) though, so pulling on the cord isn't an issue.   I think we will be moving her to her big kid bed soon, so I'm going to make her sign a contract that she either won't get sick (haha) or that she won't pull on the dang cord.

I think B will be fine though.  Sad    That sucks though, sorry babycakes.

Thanks sm. DH threw out the moldy humidifier. We'll get one with a filter, I think. I know I'm overreacting but I don't even want to go into Bs room anymore lol.
  • You aren't overreacting, you are being a mom!  Smile
