Baby shakes his head?

Does any of your babies shake their head side to side like they are saying 'no' My son just started to do this recently. I'm not looking it up on google anymore, it scares me. Does it mean baby is tired or something else. Please tell me this is a normal 6 month thing. Any other babies out there that does this? What do you think it is?

As soon as my son started doing this in his jumper I laid him down for a nap, it was almost time for one anyway, he fussed for a sec and then fell promptly asleep. New tired signal? Finding new ways to move?

Thanks

Re: Baby shakes his head?

  • He's just being a baby. Eventually he will do it because he thinks the dizzy feeling is funny. Maybe he already has figured that out. Also can be a sign of being tired.

    Nothing to worry about. :)

  • That is good to know. It was just so random and a little creepy looking :) Was searching posts on the bump for it too and seems common around this age! It is just not one of the more common things you hear about a baby doing. Crawling-yes, babbling -yes, sitting up-yes, shaking head side to side-not so much!

  • My son does that all the time...i think its just him getting comfy...he does it sometimes when hes asleep as well
  • DS does it all the time.  I think he thinks the slightly dizzy feeling is funny.  I asked his ped about it at his 6 month appt just because he happened to do it while we were there and she said it's a normal developmental discovery at this time.

It's really funny when he does it in response to DH or I saying something to him.  (DH or me: "Okay, Andy, it's time for a nap!"  DS: shakes head)

Don't worry about it unless it seems to bother him.

  • Good to know! My DS also has been doing that for the past 2 weeks. Looks funny, I wasnt concerned i just thought it was a baby thing...cute things they discover :)
  • Yes k does it everytime she goes down to sleep whips her head side to side fast. I'm not worried I figure it's just her way of getting into sleep mode

  • At almost the exact same age, my daughter started doing it. It kind of freaked me out but she stopped a few days later.

  • my little girl just started doing this at 6 weeks. it was a little concerning when she would do it while her face would rub on our shirt (or zipper) :(  it wouldnt faze her, she would just continue until she fell asleep which could take up to 10 min. (poor things face got all red) thats what prompted me to just turn her around while holding her or cradle her to get her to sleep.
