My niece had an emergency c-sec after laboring for several hours b/c the babies heart rate had dropped top low. She said they restrained her arms and it was scary. Anyone had this happen? Is this normal?
A couple of girl friends have told me this was done to them, and I saw it done in a video in my birthing class. They restrain your arms out to the sides, perpendicular to your body like on a cross, sorry for the imagery.
I was so drugged that I don't remember if my arms were strapped down or just placed there...but they are placed perpendicular to your torso - come to think of it, i think i was strapped because I couldn't touch my son when he was born - i couldn't move my arms.
I wasn't strapped down - DH held one hand, and the other arm (the one with the IV & the blood pressure monitor) I had to keep out to the side. The anesthesiologist warned me that if I started moving my arm a lot they might have to restrain it to make sure the monitors could read everything correctly. Once DS was born, DH let go of my hand to go take pics of the baby, and when he brought DS back over to me so I could see him, I was able to touch him. I had read stuff on TB about being restrained during a c/s, but I wasn't.

My arms weren't restrained but they told me to keep them on the arm pad things. I guess some people have reached into the surgery do they try to prevent that. Because the curtain is so close to your face, it's most comfortable having your arms out to the sides anyways.
Mine were restrained for both of my C/S's. Also, any other time I've been under anesthetic (even having wisdom teeth removed). I had to have DH scratch my nose during C/S's. You're kind of out of it though, so you don't really care (at least I didn't).
Mine were restrained until she was born and cleaned up, then they undid them and let me touch her. They didn't put them back in cuffs after that, but I did have to keep them out to the side on the pads.
It's no big deal. You really don't even notice it. It helps with all the IVs in your arms.
