Milk from bottle to a sippy cup... question

Hi I'm wondering how people did this.  My LO takes 3 bottles per day.  Do I go cold turkey and just start offering sippys all around.  She only drinks water from sippy's for now.  Also- with her bottle she had to sit in one place and drink the bottle. I feel she will want to walk around with a sippy- how do you handle this?  I am thinking in terms of not sipping on milk all day and know that it's a meal..

Also.. she is at about 17 oz of milk daily- i don't see pedi for another few weeks but when do we decrease milk?  She eats lots of regular food throughout the day.

How did you all do this?

Re: Milk from bottle to a sippy cup... question

  • At 12 months we started offering milk in a sippy cup instead of a bottle.  We started with just one bottle a day and worked our way up over a week or so until all the milk was coming from a sippy.

Then we switched to where he was getting the milk in the sippy only at meal or snack time.  So when he's getting milk he's generally in his high chair and can't wander around with it.

He takes anywhere from 10-16 ounces of milk a day plus water and eats three meals and 2-3 snacks per day.

  • we started transitioning one bottle a day to sippies (straw cups, actually) at 12 months. we did that for one week, then transitioned another. we saved the bedtime bottle for last. one of my guys transitioned fine but the other gave me a bit of trouble. i didn't worry too much since he was eating plenty of food so i figured if he scoffed at the sippy for a couple of days, he'd be fine. they drink 10-16oz a day now. good luck!

    All of this!

  • We had a hard time transitioning too.  The trick that worked for us was to encourage DS to drink milk from the sippy cup during times that he was distracted, such as in the car or while in the stroller or shopping cart.  Eventually, I took away the bottle and only offered the sippy in its place.

  • We started slowly switching sippy cup in place of day bottle . Once she took milk in sippy I only put water in bottle at bedtime or nap time. She let go of that on her own now has no problem. I don't like cold turkey slower transition was better for us.... Took longer but who cares?!?
  • We did it one bottle at a time, starting with the morning one. I discovered that if he has milk with lunch or dinner, he will not eat lunch or dinner, so he gets a sippy in the AM, one in the afternoon or some sort of smoothie with milk in it and 1 before bed.
