Huahua & Harper'sMom please c'mere

Hey,

Did your LO's have red cheeks/eczema before you changed your diets? Did you notice a change after you got rid of the offending food(s)?

Haper'smom - how did you figure out what foods were problematic? If I'm remembering correctly, you cut out eggs as well.

I have been dairy and soy free for over 5 weeks and peanut free for a week. I feel like her mood has improved but the rest of the symptoms are still there. She gets bright red cheeks every once in a while but always has rosy cheeks and eczema. Just today her poop was neon green and had mucous. I am starting to wonder if her poop has always been "bad." Daycare told me she had diarrhea and I brushed it off thinking it was just BF baby poop. But now I'm wondering if it is far runnier than it should be and it is a food intolerance.

The pedi just told me to cut out dairy. I chose to do soy and now peanuts on my own. I am contemplating corn next because I've been keeping a food diary and that's one of the only things I can think of.

Any insight? Sorry this got long.

  • I'm not MSPI or EBF but I'm still pumping as much as I can and supplementing. I noticed pretty much since L was 4 weeks old that everytime I would supplement with Gentlease ( broken down soy protein based and corn syrup) his cheeks would turn bright red. He always had rosy cheeks/ dry cheeks and such dry scaly skin on his legs and arms. I asked the pedi and two different doctors told me it was just dry skin- use more Aquaphor.  Then last month, his poo became mucus consistency and a different green than before. I switched his supplement formula to something without the soy and without corn syrup on the top of the ingredients list.

Low and behold his skin and poo cleared up fairly immediately. I don't know which it was, but it's either soy or corn.  I haven't changed my diet, though. I guess maybe since he gets so little from me it doesn't impact him as bad. Good luck I hope you figure it out!

Harper's Mom will have better advice. I think it's interesting we had somewhat similar pedi experiences. I think it's strange that some doctors don't see these symptoms and immediately think there is a diet issue in play.

  • Just jumping in to say that it could be two separate issues.  My LO has eczema (as do I and most of my family) which is a pretty common baby issue.  He does not have any intolerance issues, but if he did, he would still have eczema that wouldn't be cleared up with diet changes.
  • He never had eczema so I might be any help with that. I get it personally by mine is mostly to do with climate. I'm allergic to peanuts, so I never have any to start off with. You may want to try taking out other high allergy foods like gluten. I've been gluten free because the pedi suggested it but just the past few days have been adding it back in and he seems to be doing okay. The pedi didn't tell me not to do soy, I did that on my own and when I had some by mistake the other day he started getting sick again. Maybe for her it is an unrelated issue with your diet and her skin.

  • Sorry to jump in on your post. X gets the red rough patchy skin when I eat gluten and wheat. It gets especially rough and red/raw on his cheeks. HTH.

    Haha, sounds good.

I don't mind anyone jumping in! Please, come on in!

It did occur to me that the eczema could be something else. But in combination with the poop, I feel like I am missing something. I'm scared that it's gluten/wheat. I don't want to have to cut out another HUGE thing. I don't know what's left.

  • We never dealt with skin issues so I'm sorry but I'm no help there. My oldest is allergic to egg and this was confirmed at 13 months when we did skin testing. I was too afraid to try giving it to her but didn't seem to notice reactions  when I ate egg in baked goods. I barely ate egg so it was moot. Recently we had egg noodles and she, seemingly out of the blue, puked like crazy the next day.

With both girls all of the dairy and soy stuff has presented by way of GI problems. I'm frustrated right now too because D has had ectoplasma poop for the last few days. I don't know what is causing it but there is no visible blood, yet, and she is happy. I stopped at cutting soy because her diapers cleared up. Whatever is going on this weekend  has to be the result of a mistake or cross contamination or nothing at all. So, I'm not cutting any other foods right away. I will be extra careful and see what happens this week.

Have you considered speaking with a pediatric allergist or GI specialist? The testing can be unreliable at this age which makes it tough. Perhaps you should try to treat the skin issues as you would if food was not part of the equation unless you would later be upset to learn it was food related.

Im glad her mood has improved. If she is still getting something that doesn't agree with her at least she is happy and likely feeling good.

Is there any chance you are rocking a foremilk-hindmilk imbalance? I wonder this about myself.

You might want to look into culturelle kids probiotics. It is one of the only ones for mspi kids and you can do 1 packet in expressed milk per day. You can also take it yourself. It may help with the poop.

It is frustrating. Even after being just dairy free with DD forever we would get bad diapers randomly.
