Natural Birth

A Question for Moms with 2 or more?

If you tore during your first birth, did you tear in the same spots with your second? Or in different spots/Not at all?

I ask because my DD is now 10 months and my two "paper cut" tears I had from her birth have always been tender, to this day. They tell me this is normal, but I would like to prepare myself (before & after) for my second natural birth :-)

TIA for talking about such a non-fun topic!

Re: A Question for Moms with 2 or more?

  • I tore quite extensively with my first, but with my 2nd and 3rd I only had some "skid marks" - in fact, my 2nd delivery was extremely smooth and she was my biggest baby!  (7lb 7oz so not huge, but still...)

Haha, my username should read "3Girlsand1BoyMama"...with #5 on the way!  (and then we're done.)

    Me, 33, DH, 32  DDs 9, 7, 4 and DS 2.  EDD #5 4-29-15

  • 1st= 2nd degree epidural, 2 pushes, no cone head, 8 lb 6 oz2nd= skid mark with one stitch medfree, 3 pushes but cognizant of slowly pushing during crowning, no cone head, 7 lb 5 oz
  • 1st- 2nd degree tear (ob then botched the stitching job, was extremely obvious!)

2nd- 2nd degree again in the same spot (new OB fixed the botched previous stitching, yay!) This baby was also 1 1/2 lbs bigger than my first and descended extremely quickly.

  • 1st = 2nd degree tear, 45mins of pushing, 7lbs4oz

    2nd - 1st degree tear, 3 mins of pushing, 8lbs3oz

I really think (confirmed by RN and MD) that I wouldn't have torn at all with DS2 had he not had a tight cord that needed to be clamped and cut before delivery.  Him sitting there for an extended amt of time, and the MD's necessary involvement at that point probably caused the tear to occur.  Oh well -- it healed SO much faster than my 2nd degree (both in same spot).

  • I tore about the same with both kids.  2nd degree, lots of stitches, not sure exactly how many.

Neither kid came out with a cone-head.  I really think that was the main thing.  Also: healing the second time around from the tearing was a relative breeze.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • Thank you ladies for replying :-) I'm very excited about my second natural birth and was just hoping to find a little perspective on what I might experience & you ladies helped!

  • 1st: 45 min pushing, 2nd degree tear, DS was 7lbs 3 oz

2nd: 2 hours pushing, 2nd degree tear in pretty much same place, DD was 9 lbs 14 oz

Even though I tore again, I was thankful it was worse considering how much bigger DD was.

  • DS: DS was 8lbs 15oz and 24 inches. I pushed three times....way to fast and too hard.  I had a second almost third degree tear...which the OB botched (my OB was out of town when DS was born and lost it when he saw what happened....he PROMISED to deliver all of our future LOs). I was really sore for the first couple of months...I was considering surgery to undo the lousy sewing job!

DD: DD was 7lbs 10oz and 22 inches. I pushed twice but it was much more controlled. DD left a "scratch" on her way out in a different area.  I had one stitch and never had any problems....I was at church two days after DD was born, walking at the gym three days later, and running a couple weeks later.

Like you I am curious as to what will happen with this LO. Knowing what I do now I will do my best to repeat DD's delivery.

  • My 3rd degree that took 7 months to feel ok from DS1 held up perfectly with DS2. I did have some 1st degree internal and external tears with him, but not in the same place as before.
  • I only ever had a minor tear with dd1 that required two stitches. I didn't tear any other time, not even with dd4, at 10lbs 12 oz, so there is hope!
  • I had a very small tear with DS, just enough for 1 stitch. I had no tears at all with either DD or DS2.

  • I had a less than 1st degree tear with Callum (8lb8oz; 45 minutes of pushing) and didn't tear at all with Eleanor (10 lbs; 3 pushes).  It seems pretty common to tear less or not at all the second time around.
  • 2nd degree tear with my first...just a small tear in the same spot with my second.

  • Tore with both, in the same spot. First birth was with pit an epi, second was med free. My MW didn't even think I tore in the moment, but when she checked I has a first degree got 23 stitches. She thought I tore just because it was weakened scar tissue, but I also had a hard time pushing slowly.

  • I don't know if I tore in the same spot, I didn't think to ask.  But I did have a second degree tear with both, my first labor with over 2 hours of pushing, my second labor 5 pushes total, so go figure.  I will say though that I've had pretty quick recoveries and really no problems from the tears.
