I would have to say don't focus on the details too much. I regret not taking it all in and enjoying the moment. I was so busy worrying about everything else. Just try to do simple.
Try and enjoy his/her's special day! Don't stress over the small things because there is nothing that can done at that point. Don't be surprised if your LO doesn't like cake or freaks out when everyone sings happy birthday (happened to us!). Have fun
To echo the others, keep it simple and don't stress. The LOs just think it is another day, except they get cake! A was not one to like smashing things so he didn't smash the cake. He liked playing with the other LO there and a few of his toys. I kept decorations minimal.
Exactly what everyone else said, don't sweat the little stuff. Honestly, the guests aren't noticing if you spent a gazillion dollars and hours to set up a bunch of matching decorations. They're more concerned about whether you are feeding them good snacks and food at the party LOL.
Relax, have fun, sit back and watch your LO enjoy the big day. Oh, and if your LO is shy, keep an eye out for signs that they're getting overwhelmed. It's a lot for them to have a lot of strange people ( i.e. aunts and uncles and cousins that they don't see often), and everyone wants to hold the baby and get in their space. Take a couple time outs throughout the party to walk outside or away from everyone for a few minutes to give your LO a break from the commotion.
