Kissing babies On the lips?!

??!!?!

Yea kissing my baby on the lips good bye!

Harley went it for a good bye kiss and usually family moves their head to the side and get a kiss on the cheek.. Well the ILs never get kisses but I thought it would be obvious for them to move their head to the side!
Apparently not. They kissed my daughter on the lips once and then asked for more kisses. If that wasn't enough she was already strapped in the carseat and FIL had his face ready and asking for more kisses.

I was shocked speechless.

Is this the norm?

I texted my SiL and asked her if her parents, my ILS, kissed them on the lips and she said "Euw no gross" DH was also grossed out.
WTH? I have already confronted her about sharing drama with my DH cross country since he can't do anything about it and just makes him to start thinking crazy things.

I guess next time I see her I'll have to tell her about this. Fortunately she hasn't shared utensils with H AgAIN or I'd be talking to her about that too.

  • I think this is cultural. I actually still kiss my mom on he lips. Not all the time, but occasionally. Gabe loves to give kisses. I don't care where he kisses. I a family member kisses him on the mouth, that's nbd.

If it bothers you, say something. But, my big question for you is, what are you worried about?

  • HA - I remember this being a hot topic when I had DD#1 too.  We will kiss LOs on the lips, but none of our relatives ever do.  Actually, DH's family is Portuguese, so its one kiss on both cheeks.

Yeah, it will be a nonissue for my ILs too. Hs family is also Portuguese.

  • I'm with Katie. Totally cultural. We host exchange students and they all have different ways of "kissing." Our french exchange student it was on each cheek. Our 2 Russians it was on the lips if at all, and our Honduran one is pretty open about lip kissing as well.

I don't see the big deal with family, but I'm not the germ police like at all.

I don't kiss LO on the lips ever, but she does it to me all the time..lol.

  • I don't think its a big deal.  I would care if it was a stranger, but not my IL's.

I don't actually pay attention if people kiss DS on the lips or not, I know we do and DS is constantly giving sloppy open mouth kisses to whoever leans into him, so I'm sure it happens.

  • I remember answering on this before, but we kiss DS on the lips and he gives all our family big, wet, slobbery lip kisses. I guess we all think it's funny. Of course if someone was sick or whatever, we wouldn't, and I know there are germs regardless, but it doesn't bother me I guess. To each his own.

  • I wouldn't think twice about it. However, the weird uncle in my family (doesn't every family have one weird uncle!) still tries to kiss all of the cousins on the lips. It is super creepy, but he really isn't a creepster. It is just normal to him. Luckily he lives in California, and I almost never see him. I have learned to avoid the awkward kiss, but it has taken years!

  • H and sil both kissed Dd on the lips, until she started opening her mouth and things got slobbery. I also have a friend who still kisses her mom on the lips, totally normal for them.

I'm a cheek kisser myself, though.

  • My family doesn't do it, I don't do it, but I know people who do. I agree with PP about it being a cultural thing. It is the norm for some people but not for others. I wouldn't be comfortable with it, but that is just because that is what I am used to.

Germs bother me. And my mil smokes and I know my FIL had been drinking.

I didn't grow up kissing my parents on the lips, we are big huggers instead. My sil and dh even said her parents did not kiss them on the lips so it's weird to start now. Harley has kissed DH and I on the lips before but by accident. And that was never in front of the ILs.

  • It's family so I dont see the big deal. If it was a stranger or your family members were sick then I'd have a problem. My family always kissed on the lips.

  • Nope not big on lip kissing. I don't allow anyone kissing Maggie on the lips. I agree its a cultural thing because we are big huggers too and a kiss on the cheek.

Uhhh...my MIL smokes and my FIL drinks were probably key things you wanted to include in your OP...

Uh, Katie - can you tell whose genes are prominent in my girls (I have blue eyes, light skin and lighter hair)?  LOL
