rice cereal question...

On the box it says mix 1TBSP rice with 4or5TBSP formula (which is like 2.5oz)

Is this considered 1 serving? Like that's all they get for the day (when first introducing it)? and then fill them up with a regular formula bottle after?

Or do you make more rice cereal mixture for them if they finish it and want more?

I don't know what the hell I'm doing, lol, thanks!

ETA: my son eats 42oz of formula a day right now so I'm wanting to see if it helps him sleep better at night instead of waking up for one or two bottles

Re: rice cereal question...

  • I'm not sure what most people do... but with DD, when we were first introducing cereal, we just it to her once a day an hour before bed in the serving size you mentioned. Then her regular nursing session right before bed. If your LO still seems hungry, go ahead and make a little more... but you'll probably find he won't be able to finish the first serving. Their appetite gets bigger over time, and now she easily eats a whole serving, plus some extra sweet potato or fruit that I mash in there :)

    Have fun with solids!

  • I agree with what joyful said, except we'd give it to him earlier in the day to watch for any adverse reactions.
  • I feel like I don't know what I'm doing either when it comes to introducing solids! But, if it helps, here's what we do.

We split that 1TBSP serving into two feedings. One in the morning at daycare and one in the evening at home (so I mix a little more than 1/2 TBSP of cereal with about 1 oz of formula at each meal).  I did it that way to start getting him used to solid meals at different times of the day.  He finishes more cereal in the morning than he does in the evening (although he's yet to finish a full bowl at either meal) and I'm thinking that may be because he's more full from formula in the evenings.  I'm starting to cut back his late afternoon formula feeding to see if that helps him want to eat more cereal - and praying that doesn't cause him to wake up hungry in the middle of the night!
