We have been traveling with DS since he was 9 mos old. His favorite travel toys are a magnadoodle, a necklace teether, and literally my Iphone (LOL). He still loves the magnadoodle at 17 months, but now we give him crayons and a coloring book but sometimes the crayons end up in his mouth... Oh well! Good Luck. It's not easy trying to keep them occupied. We just flew 7 hours from Portugal in August and I almost wanted to jump out the plane LOL!!!
My LO was 12 mos when we flew with her. The first flight (of 4 total) was a disaster. All of the new toys I bought for her were too new and she isn't too big on change - I wish I had packed some familiar newer toys that I knew she liked. She was most entertained by DH's kindle fire. We downloaded a few animal games that she loved. Books (especially lift-the-flap) were good, as were LOTS of snacks and drinks. It was helpful that our other flights were aligned with nap/bedtime. Once we figured out the best position for her to sleep (laying across both of our laps), she slept for most of the remaining flights.
We flew in August for the first time with DD and she was 14 months. The things that kept her entertained the most were lift the flap books, SNACKS!! and our kindle fire. We even brought along big head phones so she could listen to the apps but no one else was bothered by random animal noises. Good Luck!
We took a couple longish (5 hour) flights with DS when he was 11 months old. I had read somebody's blog and they mentioned bringing painter's tape for a toy. We had extra room in our carry on so I decided to throw a roll in- he definitely had a lot of fun sticking pieces of tape to things (himself, the seatback, other pieces of tape). Flap books were good too. And definitely have lots of snacks.
I"ve never flown with our kids, but I would definitely bring a smartphone or Ipad or laptop. I bet that would be one of the best things to occupy them.
iPad or red eye flight People are really understanding about babies so don't feel bad if your lo screams non stop! I've found taking toys onto the plane gets annoying since she throws it when she's sick of it instead of giving it to us.... Yes throws it across the plane!
Re: Recommend your best toy for plane trip
Other than the iPad, the aqua doodle saved us. Plus snacks and stickers.
And people are not really understanding if babies scream nonstop on a plane! They hate it, understandably.
