Tofu Recipes Anyone?

Hi!

I bought some tofu at Trader Joes without really thinking about what to do with it.  It's organic trader joes brand... don't know if it's firm or soft, it actually doesn't say on the container!

Does anyone have a good recipe that the baby will enjoy?  I *THINK* I can also just cut it into cubes and feed it to him, right?  But I'm looking for preparations, too, though.  Even better if YOU like it and you can also feed it to the LO.

Also, can you add supersoft tofu to baked goods to bulk up the protein?  I've done this with yogurt but not sure about doing it with tofu.  We really just don't eat that much meat as a family so I'm trying to make sure I'm giving DS enough proten, so any ideas for adding healthy protein to his diet without having to buy a roast or something would be awesome!

Thanks in advance!

  • DD LOVES tofu.  We use the extra firm so she can feed herself.  I literally just take it from the package and cut it into cubes and she eats it just like that.  So healthy for them!

  • Is it the Trader Joe's Organic Baked Tofu? If so, you don't need to cook it (although you can if you want to)-- it's precooked and already has good flavor, although you could certainly add some sauce or something if you want. You can just cut it up & serve.  I often cut that up and put it in my daughter's lunches, mixed with some veggies. The TJ's Baked Tofu is really good stuff! It's great in stir fries, etc., or you could just add it to pasta or salads or something for some extra protein.

If it's softer, you'll want to drain it on paper towels (if it's packed in water), marinate it, and sautee it. Or you could stir it right into purees (but that won't work with the baked stuff)

  • I can't tell how old your LO is but this is a hit with my DD. You could also cut it up into tiny little cubes for LO to eat (my DD doesn't go for that). I know that you should monitor the amount of say given but I am just not sure what that amount is. Again, I am a believer in moderation is key in general. Good luck!

  • I just cut the tofu up into cubes. I'll sometimes drizzle it with dumpling sauce (or sesame oil and soy sauce if I don't have dumpling sauce on hand).  You can also cook it.  I'll usually cut the tofu into thick slabs (so it won't fall apart as easily) and saute it with sesame oil and soy sauce (I'm asian, we cook a lot things with sesame oil and soy sauce!).  Then I'll mix it with a veggie.  I usually do broccoli, but you could do any vegetable.  I saute the veggies separately and then fold the two together.

If you want to use tofu in baked goods, get the silken variety (not sure if trader joe's has that), which doesn't need to be refrigerated.  You can get them at any asian supermarket, or even sometimes at a regular supermarket.  It's a much smoother texture.
