Is your ergo really comfortable? Back carry?

People seem to not believe that I am comfortable carrying our 22 pound/28 inch baby in the ergo. Yesterday my mother in law said that my sister in law said that it must get heavy. MIL also asked if I would be using the Maclaren for the outgrown it sale. Nope. I love the ergo. The weight is well distrubuted. A is so cozy.

MIL's closest friend was over too and said how her daughter in law had the same carrier and used it forever and loved it. I wanted to hug her!

I would like to get the hang of the back carry using the ergo. Are any of you doing that yet?

  • I could have written this post! Mil said to me the other day "you won't get much more use out of that" when we were at a huge consignment sale.  And I proceeded to carry him for two hours and when we left I was fine and LO cried a little when I took him out. Lol. We both love it!

I have tried the back carry a few times at home but I'm not confident enough in getting him out of it to try it when we are out.  There is a local baby store that will help to teach you how to properly get in and out of different carries if you bring your carrier in...I need to go there.

  • I love the Ergo!!  I don't think people realize how light it is when you put most of the weight on your hips.

I haven't tried the back carry yet, but I also plan to go to our local baby store (it's mainly a cloth diaper store, but they carry Ergo products, too) and get a few lessons :)  They're so helpful in there!

ETA:  If there's not a store you can go to for a real life lesson, I'm sure there are tutorials on YouTube.

  • I did a back carry just yesterday at the mall. It's a little harder on my back than the front, but O passed out just the same. If my husband isn't there to help I loosen the shoulder straps a lot so it's not tight trying to pull up which can get it snagged, clip the waist belt then bend over nearly in half while situating O in the middle. I kind of just hop and scoot him until he's centered with at least 1 hand on his butt at all times. Then just pull the straps up and clip. I made the mistake of tightening the chest clip too much at first which will kill your shoulders. Practice, practice, practice over a bed or couch to get comfortable. Also, it helps to have the hood unrolled before putting baby in if you plan to use it when they fell asleep.

ETA: stupid mobile version. There were parenthesis and stuff when I typed.

  • I love my ergo but haven't used it much lately. I need to start using it again because we are going to Hawaii and think it will be so useful for the airport and flight. Plus fun for walks on the beach because I'm expecting the sand to be too soft & think for the BOB. I haven't tried the back carry to plan to this week to see if he likes that better now that he is bigger. I totally agree it's super comfortable! Sometimes I wish he could face forward though - but hopefully the back carry gives him the ability to see more.

It's not going to give you the ability for him to see over your shoulder until he's much older. Remember, you can also do a hip carry with the Ergo.

  • We love our ergo so much! My kiddo is 21 lbs and some change and I can run errands all over and we both stay comfy. I haven't tried the back carry yet but my carrier came with a DVD I believe, so I should probably check it out and practice a bit.

  • I love my ergo!  We have used the stroller maybe 5 times and I use the ergo almost every day.  I haven't done a back carry yet, but haven't really needed to either.  LO is so comfy and I like to be able to see what she is doing and kiss her head :)

  • My first DD hated the ergo. I almost sold it because we never used it. I'm so glad I didn't, and I'm so thankful that DD2 likes it. I don't know what I'd do without it! Its so nice to have my hands free so I can help my toddler or make her hold my hand. I've done the back carry a couple of times. Its comfortable and my DD seems to like it, but I'm not very good at getting her on my back without assistance. Maybe I just need to practice more at home, so I'd feel more comfortable trying it while we're out.

  • I use mine for hip carry quite a bit and I love it.  DS prefers it over the stroller any day.  Once it starts to cool off, I'll probably use it even more.
