Pregnant after 35

amnio

I saw my Doctor a few weeks ago as the test results for my quad screen (Ultrasound plus blood work) came back. The ultrasound NT scan was great with the measurement being even less than my last baby (1.38mm which probably doesnt mean much to you in the USA). But I was really really happy with that. The bloodwork assessed my risk as 1:293 with the cutoff being 1:300.

So I went to further discuss this with my OB. He is not concerned but said the only way to know 100% is amnio. He did an ultrasound and wouldnt do it that day as he would prefer the bub to be bigger and more fluid. He also said to go with my heart as a mothers instint is usually right, as I was getting very emotional deciding whether to do the amnio or not.

So Im booked for Sept 27. Im leaning toward cancelling. Such a hard decision as even though the actual test is low risk, to me there is a risk and Im already in love with my growing bump.

Anyone else been through this??

Re: amnio

  • It's a very personal choice that only you can make but honestly, I would skip it.  The amnio itself is not so bad.  I had to have one a few weeks ago to check lung maturity and it was slightly uncomfortable but no big deal.  Good luck w/ the decision.

  • I had an amnio with my second child.  I was given wrong results for my screening and by the time they caught it I was freaking out and my trust in them was shot so I elected to do the amnio.  It was my own personal decision (and the right results were good but like I said I had no trust) and I'd do it again in a heartbeat (tho it was painful).  It's something you have to decide.

  • I did the CVS and am very glad I did, but I would have a harder time at this point in my pregnancy, but would do an amnio if necessary. There is a risk and it is stressful. Sorry to not offer more help, but it really is a personal decision where you will have to weigh the different options and see how you as an individual feel most comfortable.

  • I just had an amnio on Friday.   I agree with the others, it hurt a bit going in, but otherwise its been easy!

Our 4 year old daughter is off with the grandparents so we are having a nice, quite weekend alone :)

I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
