Coconut oil

I read coconut oil is good to avoid irritated nipples while breastfeeding. Anyone used it before, what are your thoughts?

Re: Coconut oil

  • I haven't used it, but I have heard good things! Apparently you just need to make sure it is virgin and unrefined (smells like coconuts) and you wont need to wipe it off or anything before LO feeds. Try posting on the breastfeeding board to get some input.

FWIW - I put it all over my stomach 2x a day... no stretch marks to date!

I read that it is not healthy because it is high in saturated fat. But I do love cooking with coconut oil and coconut milk.

That's kind of true. Conventional coconut oil is not great for you but it's made another way. Virgin coconut oil is a different matter and is good for you.

It's totally true because when my mom was diagnosed of high cholesterol, she was told to avoid eating coconut oil for its saturated fat.

I just had a breastfeeding class last week and the instructor also told us to buy coconut oil for breastfeeding.  She told us to buy it at Trader Joe.

  • While it is a saturated fat, it actually raises your HDL (good cholesterol) levels.  It has been known to raise LDL levels as well, but not as much as typical saturated fats.  Some people swear by it, others don't care for it.  I haven't used it for cooking, but I use it in lieu of a face moisturizer and I love it.

  • I use coconut oil in my homemade body bars and body butter. I use it in wipes solution and as a diaper cream. I love the coconut smell. I will sniff my jars while I do stuff. I'm a little weird, yes.

  • 1) new research shows that though it is high in sat fat it behaves differently because its natural - do  your research again on cholosteral you'll be surprised.

    2) costco sells a great virgin organic kind for $21 for a HUGE vat.. :)
