Winter baby--pram or bunting suit needed?

I posted this ? on the baby gear board, too, in case you already read a very similar post over there!  Just wondering if I need to buy LO a pram or a bunting suit (not a pram like a stroller-which is what I thought a pram was-but like a snowsuit that goes over their clothing)  The winters here in Iowa are pretty cold, but do I need a special suit to cover her up when we go places?  We won't be having any snowball fights or making snow angels LOL, does she need one to keep her warm in her carseat in and out of the car?  Sorry for the dumb question--FTM!  If you all thought they were handy and made your kids comfortable, I'll add it to my list of things that I still need to get.  Or please share what you liked to do to keep your LOs warm during the winter.  Thanks!

Re: Winter baby--pram or bunting suit needed?

  • Unless you plan to walk around or stroller, you won't need a suit. They are not reccomended for carseats. A warm sweater and hat and a blanket in the seat will be fine.

We live in NH and maybe used our 6 suits once or twice for downtown events.

  • I read that it is not safe to put baby in a carseat with a snow suit on. I think it is better to put them in something warm, like a fleece jacket/outfit and then cover the carseat with something really warm when taking baby in and out. I do not plan on buying a snow suit yet. I though I would wait to see if I needed it. It might be good for people who have to walk a lot with the baby in the stroller (those who live in a city), but I don't plan on taking the baby outside for long periods of time.

  • Thanks--I didn't know it was dangerous to put them in a carseat with one, so that's really good to know.  And it's one thing less to buy!
  • We actually have this cover that goes over the carrier that zips up. It really helped in the snowy winter with DD.

  • We walked a ton with the baby Bjorne and used a snow suit. For me it is a must have.

  • We just moved from Texas to Minnesota and bought a snow suit.  I plan on going outside a lot this winter.

  • If you plan to wear your baby or use a stroller without the infant carseat you may want one. For the infant carseat and strollers you could use something like the bundle me. I've read that you should cut out the area near where the seatbelt is in the back of the seat so the bundle me doesn't interfere with the carseat straps. Google the car seat lady for a video on that. My dd was 8 months old by the time winter rolled around so the snow suit is what I used for her because she was too heavy for me to carry with the carseat. For ds I'll be using the bundle me.
  • I'm in Iowa too and our winters can come with some biting winds. I registered for this JJ Cole Car seat cover https://www.buybuybaby.com/product.asp?SKU=128997&RN=7024&

But unless someone gifts it I think we'll skip it now and just use blankets, which we were gifted quite a few of. At least they are more multipurpose. We don't plan to really stroll around with her outside if it's cold, so it was more to keep her protected from the wind and cold for the few minutes it takes transporting her from car to destination. I did get a sweater jacket type thing that fits 0-6 months. Next year though, she'll have a snow suit for sure. :)

  • I am in Iowa Too! We just have a bundle me, JJcole, I think. Otherwise I have a little snowsuit that was given to us but do not see us using it unless we are doing ice skating or something like that. I would say not needed.

  • We got a hand me down snowsuit for DS when he was a newborn, and I did use it quite a few times, so it was nice to have.  I would check consignment stores or see if you could find a cheap one on sale. Also, we had the bundle me for the careat, and it was sooo conveneient! At first I just used blankets, but they would always fall off, or get in the way when we were snapping the carseat in the base. The bundle me was a great investment!

  • We registered for this and received it.  https://www.buybuybaby.com/product.asp?sku=125660&

    JJ Cole? Infant Original BundleMe?

We don't plan on having LO out this winter, other than going from house to car, car to house (or doctors appt).  So this should work for us.  Winter in PA can be different one year from the other but we heard great reviews from our friends with this one and for the price we thought it was worth it.

  • We bought this https://www.carters.com/null/Hooded-Microfleece-Jumpsuit/714442838571,default,pd.html?start=2&navid=carters-search

It's not a snow suit just a sweatshirt material. It can go over his little clothing but will be safe to wear in a carseat.

  • You won't need a bunting unless you're planning to keep the baby outdoors outside of its car seat - like in a Bjorn or at an outdoor public event where you would hold the baby in your lap.  You will just need a Bundle Me or something similar.  As previous posters said, it's a really warm blanket that sits in your carseat and zips around baby.  Between this, the winter clothes, and a hat, your baby will be warm enough as long as it stays in its car seat when outdoors.
