Non-goody bag ideas

I'm having our 1st kids party and am not very creative. I'm trying to think of some inexpensive take-home gift that's not a bag of crap. We went to one party that gave out Melissa/Doug placemats with crayons. I'd like something along those lines. We're doing a princess/pirate theme (doesnt necessarily have to go with the theme). Has anyone's kids gotten a fun take-home gift from a party? Thanks!

  • For DD's Birthday (turned 4) we found some cheap but nice rubbermaid bpa free sandwich containers (not sure what to call them) and watter bottles that matched. There were Disney Princess, Tinkerbell, Cars, and Spiderman ones and I let the kids pick their favorite. I had a couple extra incase one was more popular than the others. I tied the water bottle to the matching sandwich container with a cute ribbon. It was also nice because DD's party was just a few weeks before school was starting and most of her friends were starting school this year.

DD loves hers that we kept for her and it's practical. She uses it everyday for her school lunch/snack.

  • For DD's 2nd birthday, we gave out watercolor sets.  Maybe for 1 year old, some fingerpaints?

ETA: Oops sorry, I read that as their 1 year old birthday party. For 3 year olds, watercolor sets would be great!  I also bought watercolor paper in bulk and gave out a few sheets for each kid.

  • How much are you willing to spend? Anything Melissa and Doug is expensive so assuming you are willing to spend more, how about a nice book like a Golden Book or a beginner reader, those are all 3.99 each and I think cheaper at Walmart.

  • We went to a party and all the kids got a box of crayons and a lined writing tablet, to help with writing letters.  I thought that was a great idea!

  • DD had a monkey party this year and I made mini-sock monkeys and then I scored in the dollar section of Target, cause they had a bunch of monkey themed things and I throw together the sock monkey, fabric tail for the kids to wear, tattoos, and a monkey cup w/ straw(these were great, I labeled them and then the kids had there own cup all day long) and red vines(monkey's swing on vines Smile )

The mom's seemed to love the items in my goody bags.

  • Crayons and  coloring book is always fun, a book or a puzzle.  We did plastic princess cups with a squishy ball one year and that was a huge hit.  I know some people like to do cookies or brownies or things like that although I always skip food as goody bags just due to the number of allergies with my kids friends.
