Question about Godparents

So we had asked the Godparents to be godparents before DD was born. Today is her baptism. The godmother can't make it, just got the call. Do I scramble to find someone else or just explain when she's older why she doesn't have a godmother? I've got 3 hours, this is not how I wanted to wake up today.

Re: Question about Godparents

  • Thanks, I'll ask. I know there are sacraments that they need to partake of but I wasn't sure if she could still be godmother since she wasn't there for the sacrament.

  • You can have someone stand in as a proxy, no problem.  The original godmother will still be the godmother.  Just ask another family member or friend who will be present today.

Both my husband and I had similar situations when we were baptized, and had other people standing in for our absent godparents.

Congratulations to your baby on their baptism :)

  • Have someone stand in. It's not uncommon to do that. Is this a catholic baptism? Technically you only need one god parent so under church terms this person might not be the god mother but doesn't mean she can't be under yalls terms. Did she have a good reason for canceling?
