Total 3 ultra sounds

Today my OB told me that there will be total of 3 US's.. one was done when i had my first visit at 8 weeks ..next will b at 13th week and after that the last one at 21st week..is this the way its going for everyone ?

I am not sure if the insurance company covers all 3 ultra sounds..

Re: Total 3 ultra sounds

  • I've had 4 already and have my NT scan on Tuesday...my insurance covers anything needed by my Fertility doc and now my OB...you need to check if they cover the testing one like the NT, but other then that you will be fine..

  • It just depends. If you are low risk, that's more than my doctor does. You get two with them. A dating ultrasound at your ten week, and the bug ultrasound at 20 weeks.

If you have any problems or concerns, you can get more. I'm high risk, so I will get them every other week starting at week 16-28. Then I get non-stress tests twice a week from week 30-39. They do a fluid check at those with the ultrasound.

So, if there are problems I am sure you will have more. I hope you have a uneventful, low risk pregnancy. All those ultrasounds are a pain. I practically live at the doctor's office/hospital (they do non-stress tests there) during the end of my pregnancy. Not fun.

Just wondering why you are considered high risk?

    No worries :)
My 2 year old was a single FET. We thought it would be a bust for sure. My "sub-par" embryo is currently sleeping in his crib :) it is amazing.
Good luck to you and congrats!

  • I only get two (8 weeks, 20 weeks) no NT scan unless something comes back weird with blood work
  • I wasn't told how many I will get but I know for sure I get at least 3. I just had the dating us, at 12 wks I get the NT scan and at 18 they will do one for gender.

  • I don't know if it's different in New York, but I think I get an ultrasound at every appointment and I'm not high risk. I've already had 3 and I'm having my 4th tomorrow for the NT scan. It seems like this is a lot more than most people get. I'm not sure why...

  • I was told that I will get 4 ultrasounds: 8, 12, 21-22, and 31-33 weeks. I am not high risk, but I am also living abroad so the standards are different.

  • This.  Most insurances will cover whatever your OB deems necessary.

I'm also high risk (due mostly to MTHFR) and will have ultrasounds every 3-4 weeks until around 20-24 weeks, then every 2 weeks until 28-30 weeks then weekly; I think I start non-stress tests around 28 weeks as well (maybe 24 weeks?).  This was the protocol with my 1st and aside from my small copay, all of the ultrasounds were covered by my insurance.

LOL I know what you mean about practically living at the doctors office those last couple of months.  Gosh, with all the u/s and monitoring, each appt would take 2 hours at least. Ultrasounds lost their appeal around 30 weeks or so.

I get one ultrasound at 20 weeks.

    Yup. Me too.
  • imageNandaB:
they got me all worried about a monster sized baby and he was 'only' 8 lbs 10 oz.

I had the opposite of this.  I kept telling them "I feel like this baby is gigantic" and at the ultrasound one week before I delivered they said he was only about 8 to 8 1/2 pounds.  He was 10 lbs. 8 oz.

It didn't even occur to me last time that it may not be covered by my insurance [thank goodness they all were] I had quite a few! One at my first appt around 8 weeks, another one early on around the 'gummy bear' phase, the anatomy scan, and then at least 2 more because they were worried about his size. I felt it was excessive, especially since they got me all worried about a monster sized baby and he was 'only' 8 lbs 10 oz. I am hoping for less this time and I will decline the extra ones at the end unless they think its really necessary. I am not convinced they are 100 safe, and all they did was stress me out unnecessarily.
They did this to me too. In fact, when I was admitted to be induced... All the residents came in and were guessing how big he would be. I was terrified. I had one of my twins without the epidural and the other with. They weighed in at 1lb 3 oz and a little less than a pound.... And that HURT. Having doctors guessing 10+lbs while the nurse is starting my IV is not a good time.

He was 8lbs 5oz. My DH was the closest guess. He said 8lb 4oz. None of the doctors said below 9. I was induced due to BP issues. If they had induced from his size, I would have been pissed. Ha ha.
