Oh, FFS! An article on sex selection

This is one of those things you read and think, "Am I getting punked? No way is this real," but apparently, if you have 20K to burn and really, really don't like having boys you can have it your way. Like Burger King.

  • Thats such BS. Its your child! Whatever happened to loving someone unconditionally?

  • Besides the fact that I think you don't mess with nature and you are meant to love whatever you have, these are the types of  things that I would think they would discover are unhealthy or something years down the line. Like a side effect would be you grow an extra penis or something :/

  • While this article is disturbing--especially the part where the couple actually considered aborting a perfectly healthy baby just because he has the added baggage of a penis (no pun intended)--I have heard where gender selection is used to ensure that the baby does not have certain genetic /developmental disorders that are common or exclusive to a certain sex. In those cases it makes a little more sense to me. Its still unsettling, still not something Id personally do etc, but my moral beacons dont flash quite as wildly when those motivations are involved as opposed to just wanting a certain sex.

Agreed. I have a friend who has had four non-viable pregnancies. A selection of embryos would provide them with a baby, cut out the excessive medical expenses and save them a lot of heartache. But that's not the same as what this chick was doing.

I just feel sorry for the little boy, like they looked at him and said, "Oh, fine. You can stay, but we're not happy about it."

  • so so gross.  I can't believe someone would go through IVF when they are capable of getting pregnant on their own. Or would consider aborting a boy at 15wks.

feel almost the same way. i just can't help thinking of her sons who (i can be wrong) might get less of the love because they were the "errors" on her "trials" to have a girl.

tho, my aunt wanted a boy so badly too, but she ended up with 5 girls - she's happy and they're a great family. best of luck to them, i guess.

  • I find the abortion part really disturbing, and I am VERY pro-choice. I think spending that much on sex selection is a personal choice, but methinks she needed some counseling. Or something. Sheesh.
  • Yuck. This makes me so sad. I bet the little girl they finally had is the favorite child, and that sucks. I hope their boys never ever see this article.

Could you imagine finding out that your mom cried after finding out you were a boy? (Or girl, either way). It sucks.

A woman's life is nine parts mess to one part magic, you'll learn that soon enough...and the parts that look like magic turn out to be the messiest of all.
  • If she's willing to spend that much, why not ADOPT a baby girl?  It would cost less, you'd be guaranteed the gender of your choosing, and there's no weird eugenics-type crap involved.

Yes  How about adopting a baby girl from a country like India or China where their girls are not wanted?

Adoption is usually much more expensive than a round of IVF, even IVF with PGD. I agree with people using PGD to avoid transferring embryos with chromosomal issues or if having a certain sex of child is more likely to result in genetic issues.

I do, however, find it sickening that someone would abort a perfectly healthy baby simply because it's not the sex they had their heart set on.

Yeah, that's about where I figure OP got to when she first thought she was being punked.  I really hope this woman doesn't treat her sons as though they were only conceived as attempts at getting a baby girl, especially that last one.  And if she's so open about it that she'll do interviews like that, I'm sure it'll be no secret.

And FFS, she cried in bed for WEEKS? Be happy you can HAVE a baby, lady!  Oh, boo hoo, you can't have a baby girl, you can only have healthy baby boy after healthy baby boy.  Cry me an effing river.

I hope her daughter ends up skipping the entire girly princess stage and being a tomboy.

  • Lurky-loo-ing

I dont get as stabby as most people about preferring one sex over the other- but OH MY GOD! Considering abortion!?!?!

My heart dropped for all of 1 second when I saw "BOY." Why did I want a girl? Because I wanted to dress her up in fluffy pink sh*t. Then I thought I was silly and was overjoyed I got a little guy.

You know what has been one of my favorite moments? Kissing my sons belly and getting a sleepy giggle while he was in his diaper. Nothing about my baby revolves around his clothing.

I hope "Megan" gets a tomboy who likes her poor brothers' legos more than they do

All of this, but most especially the bolded part.

  • THIS is legal in the US, but abortions for women that have been raped are up for discussion in the current election?  I am surprised that is legal in the states.  The media has led me (as a Canadian) to believe US politics are so driven by the "religious right."  ???
