Hi,
I'm a lurker on this particular forum, and I'm throwing a shower for my best friend. I need some suggestions... I'm throwing a (gender neutral) shower with a (literary, not Disney) fairy tale theme. Does anyone having any suggestions? I'm considering using board books as decorations, making a "Once upon a time"-themed invitation, sugar cookies that look like targets (a la Robin Hood), cupcakes that are playing card themed (a la Alice and Wonderland... along with tea), and a game of "what book does this quote come from" (that people can fill out as desired... some of the guests are English teachers, so I think that many people will do well). I've seen showers where punch is referred to as "Pixie juice" (a la Peter Pan)... I may ask people to write down their favorite nursery rhyme and bring it for my friend (since so many people hate being asked to bring a book). I can then have the rhymes bound into a book. As a guest, would you hate this idea? Does anyone have any other ideas that would fit with this theme?
Finally, I've found a restaurant where I can host the shower... I can play the theme up if I do it at home (and many of the decorations will be useful gifts), but it will be easier if I do at the restaurant. As a guest, would you prefer a shower at someone's home (with room to spread out and a theme that is really carried through) or a small side room at a nice (but not majorly high end) restaurant (where no outside food is allowed, so the food won't match the theme)?
Thanks in advance.
Re: Theme help needed
I think most guests wouldn't care too much one way or the other- the only exception I can think of is if you have a group that's really chatty and has a hard time wrapping stuff up, you'd have the flexibility to hang out as long as you want at your house vs. a restaurant kicking you out at a certain time.
As far as the ability to carry out the theme, I think the MTB and maybe the grandmothers would be the only ones to really notice or care. I think most guests are happy if they have something to nibble on and a chance to catch up with the MTB and the chance to ooh and aah over cute baby stuff.
I think if you're really invested in the theme and have the time to put into it, host at your home. If it would be a lot easier on you having it at a restaurant, do that.
I prefer showers at people's homes...just more relaxing, but do whatever is good for you. I'm not into looking at the decorations so much even though I probably go a bit overboard myself when hosting a shower.
I love the idea of people writing down a nursery rhyme and you putting them in a book form. What a great idea! I might copy it if you don't mind.
Hi! My mom is throwing me a book themed shower ... so not really nursery rhymes, but similar. Here are some things that you could possibly consider from her shower: you can purchase old card catalog drawers on etsy and fill them for decoration with flowers, etc. My mom actually bought old library cards with children's books on them and is using them as placecards in the drawer. Her favor is a bookmark that you can buy custom stamped/printed on etsy. Her activity (since sometimes games can be lame) is that each table will make a recordable storybook for the baby. She is just using regular food, not book themed food. And she is also decorating with board books like you said.
As a guest I wouldn't care if it were at a house or a restaurant, but I would MUCH rather bring a book than a nursery rhyme. Maybe you could give the option?
Your shower sounds ADORABLE! I like your food ideas.
Thanks for all of the thoughts - good point about the ability to chat at the end of the party! And I love the idea about recording story books at each table. That is really cute! I appreciate the help.
