Ok ladies, tell me how you would take this and what you would think of this;
On August 19th I went to the hospital (as you all know) and was admitted for three days for PPROM (Pre-term Premature Rupture of Membrane) of my Baby B (Miles). They were never able to prove without a doubt that I ruptured when I was admitted because they couldn't get a positive swab. The day I was released I was home for 4 hours and it happened again (after no problems in the hospital those three days). This time when I went back, the swab came back as it being amniotic fluid. (They checked it under a microscope for "ferning").
A week later my OB and the
hospital referred me to a MFM 40 miles from my home. I met with them,
they decided it was best to do an amnio where they inject blue dye into
the affected baby's sac. If it leaks, there had been a rupture, if not,
there was no rupture. The dye test came back negative.
Four days after the amnio with the dye, last Tuesday I had another big gush of fluid. I went back to my local Birthing Center (hospital) again, where they once again confirmed with a swab and ultrasound that Mile's had ruptured again. My heart was heavy with sadness again. I had an ultrasound at my OB's office a few days later and the tech couldn't even find the membrane to be able to measure a fluid level on Miles (as in, he had no fluid???) Needless to say it's been rough.
So, we went back to the MFM this afternoon and they checked the fluid levels, etc and everything is good. The Dr I met with is lead to believe I never have ruptured. I asked her how that explains to positive swabs and ultrasounds showing no fluid. She said "Well, when my residents come back to me with a positive swab I asked where the sample was taken from. A lot of them have taken the sample from the cervix where it can be false readings. It has to be taken from the vagina" Also she explained that she doesn't know what kind of equipment my OB/local hospital has, but their ultrasound machines are very advanced (this chain of hopsitals my MFM is part of is ranked one of the best in the country) and they may just be able to pick up better images. I'm still being a skeptic based on all she's saying because I don't know how so many tests and ultrasounds could be so wrong! Then she continues on with "if Baby B had ruptured twice he would be showing signs of it. As in, his chest would measure small because his lungs haven't been able to expand to their full potential due to no/low fluid" Also she said the blue dye amnio is their 100% golden rule and I didn't leak die. She also said that the baby's sac is like a balloon, if you put a pin hole in it, it leaks, constantly, not comes and goes. All her points seem valid but we're so reluctant to get our hopes up and think everything is ok. So, I'll continue to go to the MFM for fluid checks every week until I reach 24 weeks, then I'll see them every 4 weeks (since they're 40 miles away).
I don't know what to make of all this. I'm just trying to see it as good news but it seems like every time we've gotten good news, something brings us back down. What do you ladies think?
(Thank you to ALL of you who were patient enough to read this whole thing!!)

She said "Well, when my residents come back to me with a positive swab I asked where the sample was taken from. A lot of them have taken the sample from the cervix where it can be false readings. It has to be taken from the vagina"
That's an...odd...statement. AF is AF whether they find it near the cervix or further down in the vagina. That argument would make sense if she was saying you are ruptured, but not the other way around. The way I understand it, the AF tests can have false negatives, but not false positives. I actually tested negative twice before finally testing positive 5 days after the first test. I was told by numerous Drs that sometimes they swab and there happens to be no AF in the exact spot that was swabbed so the test comes back as a false negative.
Then she continues on with "if Baby B had ruptured twice he would be showing signs of it. As in, his chest would measure small because his lungs haven't been able to expand to their full potential due to no/low fluid"
I was ruptured for over 4 weeks and Baby A never showed any signs of it other than her fluid level being low. Both babies' heartbeats were checked every 4 hours and I had numerous growth scans while in the hospital.
She also said that the baby's sac is like a balloon, if you put a pin hole in it, it leaks, constantly, not comes and goes.
This was true in my case. I had a slow leak, but I leaked all day every day from the day I ruptured until the day I delivered. There was no mistaking it... even when I tested negative for AF the first 2 times.
I'll be thinking of you and crossing my fingers that you are not ruptured. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. You can page me on Multiples or Sept 2012!

I would say your symptoms sound the same as my slow leak. Hang in there. Oh and ask for as many steroid shots as you can get. They really do help. Good luck, T&Ps are with you and the babies!
