Door to the basement

What are you doing to secure this?

Ours has a lever-type handle and I was reading reviews on the door knob cover for these and they are not good.

  •  Maybe one of these things would work.  I saw it on you tube also.

  • Ours locks and also has a deadbolt further up. The locks were already on the door when we bought the house.

Not sure what can be done for the lever handles.

And I have never been in a house without a basement. Where do they not have basements? I know BIL in San Diego does not have one.

No one had basements when I lived in Houston.  I'm guessing that it's harder to do when you're close to sea level?

Maybe. Could also be a regional thing i know house styles can and do differ by region.

I thought "the south" is usually basement less.

Yes, here in Florida, if you try to dig to put in a basement, it better be water proof. :::Winky Face:::

  • My DH is going to replace all of our lever handles. I don't think he's actually even doing it with baby safety in mind, just because he doesn't like them, but child proofing is a nice bonus.

  • We have a regular knob that locks so we keep it locked and we keep the kitchen/dining gated off.  Can you get a lever knob that locks?

Yeah, but I'm just worried that he would figure it out.  When my nephew was around two, he got ahold of a screwdriver and took a doorknob off!  I guess I'm just paranoid!

We can't block off the kitchen because it's an open floor plan.  I keep him contained in the loft upstairs for his crawling/cruising around now, but I know I can't do that forever.

  • I'd try a gate first.

We have a basement but the door is outside.

Also, in South TX we did not have one, but in north Texas, the panhandle area some houses had basements because of the tornados.
