My 17-month old has a common skin condition known as "Keratosis Pilaris" which is sometimes referred to as "chicken skin." He has tiny bumps all over his upper arms (mostly), with a few on his cheeks and thighs too. According to our dermatologist, there is nothing much we can do to completely clear the skin... there's no cure! However, there are products that will help with the dryness and provide some temporary relief.
So being the proactive person that I am, I've done tons of research and over time, have bought various products to treat my son's skin starting since he was about 9 months old. I know that what may work for my child, may not work for yours.
But here are my recommendations anyway...
This routine seems to be working amazingly for my son's skin. His face has never been smoother and the bumps on his arms has lessened dramatically!
Note: I'm still on the fence about using the AHA since I don't feel completely comfortable with the idea of treating my son's condition with harsh chemicals. Although some dermatologists actually recommend it, I might just eliminate this product from his daily routine and see how it goes.
Let me know what products you've used. Good Luck!
Re: Best Treatment for my Toddler's "Karatosis Pilaris"
I had Keratosis Pilaris since birth and it only went away completely when I moved to south florida and constantly moisturized and got older.
Cerave helps my daughters. I don't use anything else at this time. My daughter has it bad and on her face like I did, but it is what it is. As long as she stays moisturized it doesn't get itchy or infected.
I also have used the Phisoderm creamy baby wash.
I have read that adding fish oil (EFA) to the diet can help. There is a chapter about "chicken skin" in a book I just read called "What's Eating Your Child" by Kelly Dorfman who is a nutritionist. She says that a fatty acid deficiency can cause it.
Barclean's Omega 3's Lemon smoothie fish oil (EFA and DHA) is what I give my son. (he does not have KP) It tastes great. You can find it in the refrigerated section where they sell natural foods or vitamins. it's about 13 bucks for a small bottle, but for a child that should last you about 3 months.
Fish oil is also awesome for brain development. Good LucK! HTH!
