Pregnant after 35

First u/s ?

Amazing the things you forget in three years! Not only am I brain dead at the moment I am beginning this process with a new OB.

Followed up with my doc and got my second beta #. Numbers are good and she scheduled my first ultrasound on the 24th. I know it will be transvaginal, but am concerned it will be too early to see anything. Seemed like I waited much longer the last time around. I will be 6w 2 days at the most. Too soon?

Re: First u/s ?

  • I saw a heartbeat with both my children by that date.  However, the doctors always warned that it might be too early and not to be disappointed if you don't.  If you can, I would wait till 7 weeks.

  • I saw a HB around that time as well.

  • I just went at 6 weeks 3 days and saw the heartbeat but my Dr. was very clear it wouldn't have been uncommon if we didn't. He also warned it's sometimes hard to measure the rate that early, they don't always get a clear read. You could get lucky but if you want to wait a little bit longer it's totally understandable.

  • I had a missed miscarriage with my first pregnancy.  For that one, they did the first ultrasound at about 6 weeks, and they did tell me it was possibly too early.  I then had 2 more weeks of gut-wrenching, horrible waiting, more ultrasounds, etc. before they finally determined it was a miscarriage.  For that reason, I waited until 9 weeks with my last (full-term) pregnancy for the first ultrasound, and with this pregnancy I am going next week at about 8 weeks.  If we don't see a heartbeat, then at least I will know the answer and won't have to endure all of the horrible limbo, "it-might-be-too-early" crap.

So that was my choice, but some women like to get the early ultrasound.  I personally felt that since it wouldn't make any difference in the outcome, might as well wait until we were sure to see something, which means waiting until at least 8 weeks.  I hope this helps.

  • You should definitely be able to see the gestational sac. Almost certainly a yolk sac too. HB is possible but not guaranteed. It can take up to 7 weeks to show up. Good luck!

  • Thanks for the advice. I know the u/s is for dating purposes. Looking back I was 6 weeks and few days with my last pregnancy. It was so awesome to see a heartbeat after our losses. I will just pray that it is the right time.
