Heart murmur?

Macy and I just got back from her 15-18 month check-up.  On top of sitting there for 1.5 hours (during her naptime of course...), FOUR shots, and a never-ending bleeding finger from her iron/lead poke (seriously, blood gushing out from under the bandaids)... her pedi said he heard a heart murmur and wants us to see a cardiologist.  He said it's more than likely nothing, but he wants to be sure.  Obviously, I am freaking out and am tempted to visit Dr. Google, but I know I probably shouldn't.  Does anyone's LO have a heart murmur, or does anyone know anything about it?  Please no scary stories....

Re: Heart murmur?

  • DD was found to have a small heart murmur at her 12 month appointment. Our doctor really wasn't too concerned and said that most kids grow out of them. Your story actually makes me more nervous now....our doc never mentioned anything about a cardiologist workup...

  • This is only the second time we've seen this pedi, but he didn't hear it at her 1 year check-up, and her other pedi in Minnesota didn't hear it either (that I know of).  Yeah he kept saying it's probably nothing, but it doesn't really make me feel better.  I was wondering why he was listening to her heart for so long, then at the end of the check-up, he's like "has she ever had a heart murmur?"  I was like... umm, no....

  • DD has a heart defect that was first detected by her pedi hearing a murmur at 6 weeks, which is what prompted a referral to a cardiologist. It is rare though that a murmur would lead to that (CHD diagnosis). Murmurs are very common. DD actually has 2 murmurs that are unrelated to her defect. It's really scary, but chances are it's nothing. At the visit, she'll get an EKG which takes seconds, and probably an echocardiogram. My pedi cardio has a TV in the echo room which is great for distracting the LOs during the echo. Bring a video on your phone or portable DVD player in case the doctor doesn't have it. Please feel free to PM me. I've been there. I know how scary this is.

  • Heart murmurs are fairly common, and are often "cosmetic" for lack of a better word.

I've had a heart murmur my whole life and it's never affected my health or daily life in any way. I had to see a cardiologist a couple times in my childhood just to make sure everything was OK and run some tests, but that was the end of it. For some reason I never grew out of it like they thought I would.

I wouldn't worry about it if your doc told you not to. It's probably nothing.

  • I have a heart murmur. Mine is totally normal, I even competed in track in college. My understanding is that they are common and normal, but sometimes can be of concern. Usually doctors will listen for it every visit, and often times kids out grow them.
  • We just found out DD2 has a murmur at her 1 month appt. we have to get an echo done next week. Her pedi said they are fairly common and usually not a big deal.
I've found it best to stay away from Dr. Google :

  • Thanks, ladies.  I skimmed some things on Google and it did say that most murmurs are normal/common.  I'm trying not to worry too much Confused  Sorry to the pp's that I might have made nervous!

  • Our pedi heard one at LO 6 mo appt. She sent us to have an echo just to make sure. His heart was perfectly fine. A murmur is the sound the blood makes flowing through the heart. That sound can be made from "small" vessels causing turbulent blood flow or it can be a structural defect. I doubt it would be structural if it wasn't heard until now.

  • (((HUGS))) that would make me worry too!  But like PP, I'm sure she'll be fine!  I know several adults (including my mom) who have murmurs and it hasn't affected their health at all.
  • I had a murmur when I was a kid and had a couple tests and nothing came of it, also, I always new that I had it as a kid and a few years ago I fainted had some checks a Dr thought he may of heard a murmur but all came back negative. I wouldn't worry unless he seemed really concerned and if he was he would be tested same day I am sure.

Though I would be a little worried if they said that to me about my son

  • I had one as a kid. Never an issue and I guess it went away.
