baby food question...

At B's 4 month check up he was given the go on baby food! I was just wondering how much he should be eating a day. I checked out the gerber meal planner thing and it has basically 2 of the little plastic tubs of baby food a day on it. It broke it down into breakfast, mid morning snack, lunch, and dinner w/ 4oz of milk inbetween times. I don't know why, but i feel like thats a bit much??? I was thinking breakfast, lunch, and dinner baby food times would be enough...

Re: baby food question...

  • I would start off and play it by ear- especially since it's good to introduce one food every few days in order to watch for allergic reactions.

Also, starting food is more for practice, rather than consumption in the beginning. You'll also want to keep an eye on BM's. What goes in, must come out. Rice cereal tends to constipate. And, food should always follow breast milk or formula in the first couple months. So, they won't be THAT hungry. The Gerber suggestions seem like ALOT.

We started with an ounce once a day for a couple weeks, then did twice a day for a week or so. Then we actually took a break since DS seemed uninterested. Now we are back to foods, but just an ounce or two once or twice a day- we're following his cues. Since I BF, I don't expect the food to really be for calories or nutrition for another month or two. We are just trying to make it an enjoyable experience for now.

I also don't use jars or Gerber- we're making our own- but the suggested amounts still is a lot for a 4mo infant. You may want to try making your own for now? It's so much easier than buying food- one pear makes ALOT, one sweet potato gave me 15oz- that's 15 servings in my book. You can use frozen fruit/veggies, too. Just add water and puree/blend. Simple, nutritious, and no crap or preservatives. Plus, budget friendly for those concerned about costs.

Have fun with food and take lots of pictures! :)

I have something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Dr-Browns-Designed-Flexpods-Stackable/dp/B0052OTQZ4/ref=sr_1_20?ie=UTF8&qid=1347658261&sr=8-20&keywords=baby+food+storage+jars

and two avocados made 8 jars. I bf, and I'm really not concerned about her getting nutrition from solids at this point, so I just give her as many bites as she seems interested in, and then let her play. She probably eats about half an ounce of food each meal- we let her try twice a day.

  • I have no idea if this is correct, but someone posted on 3-6 a month or so ago to start with 1 Tbsp and work up to 1/4 cup. The poster said 1/4 cup is about a meal size. At 8 months or so, you can start working to two meals a day and at 12 months 3.  Again not sure if this is correct, I haven't really seen good info on how much to give.

  • I  have no idea what the "right" thing to do is, but I'll tell you what we do with DS.  He's a chunk so he's been eating food for about a month.  We feed him half a tub of Gerber 1st foods fruit mixed with a little rice cereal in the morning.  We make the rice cereal with an ounce of milk and about 1/8 of a cup of cereal.  We then feed him a half a tub of veggies mixed with cereal in the evening.  We feed him this after a bottle.  He doesn't always eat all of it, but we just let him eat what he wants and let him play with the spoon, so he can see eating as an enjoyable experience and not a struggle.  He doesn't have any allergies and has no problem eating veggies even though he's already been introduced to fruit.  I would start by mixing just a little bit of a veggie with some cereal, and see what he does.  I started with sweet potatoes, and he loved it.  Again, my little guy loves to eat so this might be a little much for your guy.  As everyone says he loves his groceries!!  (I know, I have no idea what the he!! that means either!!)
