Tentatively Scheduled for a C-Section... but Confused

Last week I saw the MFM (i.e. high risk OB) who told us that because of my Unicornuate Uterus, if baby hasn't turned head down by 37 weeks, she would definitely not recommend doing an ECV and she would absolutely not allow me to attempt a vaginal breech delivery.  So she recommended scheduling a C-Section.

Then today, I saw my regular OB who had a totally different opinion.  She said that at 37 weeks, as long as I have enough fluid, she would be willing to attempt an ECV, and if it's successful, I can have a vaginal delivery whenever after that I end up going into labor.  But for now, we tentatively scheduled my C-Section for October 16th in case we decide not to do the ECV or in case the ECV is unsuccessful.

Now I just have to weigh the risks and benefits and decide how important it is to me to have the possibility of attempting a vaginal delivery... but it's hard to reconcile the two doctors' very different opinions.  One said absolutely not, no way, never and the other said we can try it.  I figure worst case scenario, I have a C-Section... the ECV just gives me the possibility of attempting a vaginal delivery.

Any opinions?  Anyone have experience with an ECV?

  • and ECV  can be dangerous anyways. I would have a difficult time knowing all the risks AND having the high risk OB say no, and being ok with going through with it.

BUT, I'm also supportive of c-sections. Having a vaginal birth was never something I felt like I needed so for me, to go with the c-section would be the easy and obvious choice.

  • As much as I dread a csection and even if my ob did them, I would refuse and go right for the section. They are very risky and dangerous for baby.

  • I know nothing about a unicornate uterus so I don't know.  I would consider the ECV but I'm not high risk.  I also have an irrational fear of surgery and would do what I could to attempt a vaginal delivery.  Of course my MW will attend breech births as long as mom is considered a good candidate.

Currently going through our second deployment. Can't wait for Zoe to meet her daddy!

  • I know a c-section is something you'd rather avoid, but I would absolutely be taking the high risk doc's advice over the regular OB. No question.

  • I have a complete breech and am scheduled for a c section as well.  I researched the ECV and decided against.  My doctor did not think that my baby would turn due to her being approximately 6lbs and how tight my stomach/abs are.  After researching the ECV, I ultimately decided not to try it because typically it has a 50-50 success rate.  I find having a plan with the c section a little less stressful.  Good luck with your decision.  Do some research and go with your gut feeling.

  • I'm a FTM so no thoughts on ECV.  But, in all honesty, I would follow what MFM recommends for the sole factor that they are more specialized in high risk patients and I don't want to say the "know" more but they are often times more experienced in those areas. Yes, having a vaginal delivery is preferable to a cesarean but isn't having a healthy baby even more preferable? Just my thoughts....

  • Have you heard of the Webster chiropractic method? I've heard of a few people that had success with a Webster certified chiropractor getting treatments and the baby turning. I think it's worth investigating.

If it was me, I'd look into this perhaps while trying the spinning babies exercises.  If that didn't work I'd go for the c-section.  As PP said, having one Dr. say absolutely no way would be enough to scare me away from the ECV.  I think they have there place, but it can start labor or even put baby into distress, which just wouldn't be worth the risk for me when there are other safer options.
