Rethinking solids

We started around 4.5 months because he drinks so much formula every day (between 32 and 36 oz) and the doctor said she thought he was ready (and so did H and I). We started with sweet potatoes and he seemed really into it. I've tried giving him other foods, and except for apples mixed in with sweet potatoes, he's refused. He also just seems annoyed by the whole thing and sometimes he spits it all up an hour later. Is there any harm in stopping and restarting in a few weeks?

Re: Rethinking solids

  • I don't think so, give him some time and try again in a few weeks.

  • Exactly what we did.  I tried at 4.5 months and he was ok, really liked peaches and bananas but then started to refuse them.  Just wasn't interested or hungry I guess.  So we've stopped for now and he's EBF.  I'll probably start again after his 6 month check up.  I must say i'm loving how easy EBFing makes CDing!

  • We started DS on solids at 4 months for the same reason. He loved it and did great the 1st couple of weeks, but the last few weeks he hasn't wanted any part of it. Lol. He will take a few bites and then just starts swating at the spoon and turning his head away. So we stopped. I figure we will try again when he is 6 months. However, DS is extremely interested in our food. Someone recommended BLW to me, and I don't really know a lot about it. We looked it up, and it seems like it might be good to try with DS. Obviously, I have a lot more to learn about it first. I think DS just doesn't like the purees that well. I don't have any advice, I just wanted to tell you that you are not the only one who is experiencing this. Smile

  • We've had a lot of luck with BLW. It's not complicated but it's worth reading up on it so you feel comfortable. Your LO may respond better to finger foods than to pures. We also tried spoon feeding a little at dinner to fill him up, since they don't consume a lot at the beginning with BLW, and it ended up upsetting his tummy. I think he just does better making his own decisions about what to eat and when to stop.

  • I've been making purees and letting s play with the soon and bowl. She kept stealing the soon anyway. We'll try finger foods in a few weeks.

  • For my DD I think the taste of straight up purees is too strong. Most of the time we mix it with oatmeal. Once she gets used to the flavor we try it just straight she has been pretty receptive this technique of inducing foods.

  • We took a break for a couple weeks, too. Now, started back up and just following DS's cues. Back to feeding about one ounce/once a day after breast feeding. Yesterday he polished off sweet potties and screamed for mre, so I gave him some peas and pear. Just playing it by ear....

DS2 was this way. I tried purees repeatedly and he refused every time. He chose BLW on his own! It was really easy with him, which is why I'll be trying it with Lexi soon.
