WWYD -- scratches at school

Zach is in an autism classroom for kindie, and has been in school for 6 weeks now.  On three separate occassions, another child in the classroom has scratched him, twice hard enough to break the skin.  The teacher reports it to me each time, and I have not made a too much of it because I know it could just as easily be my kid who is the aggressor (with Zach, he's not a scratcher, so his actions wouldn't leave marks).  She indicated at our parent/teacher that she was going to move their seats to separate them, but he came home with another scratch today on the back of his neck.

I'm torn about what to do -- I don't want Zach to be hurt at school, but I get that behavior issues come with autism.  Any suggestions?

Re: WWYD -- scratches at school

  • I'm not sure what to suggest.  I know that one of the 1st things they asked for Chris at pre-school was if he was a) self-injurious or b) was he prone to hurt others.  Other than some shoving, Chris hasn't shown any behaviors to that effect.  I would bring it up to the teacher again. Maybe she hasn't separated them or maybe she has and this child is seeking your son out or maybe your son is rough-housing (playfully) with him and this is just the result of rough play.  Chris started coming home with bruises but it's from the playground at school.  He's a runner but a bit of a reckless one so it wouldn't surprise me if he's taken quite a few spills.
