DD getting very upset after eating

DD's eating habits has changed the past week or so. When she wasn't getting enough or was full she would pull off the boob. It then developed into a bobbing routine where she would pull off & come back over and over but eventually ending and we would either switch sides or she would be done completely. She would take around 15/20 minutes to nurse entirely.

Now she still does the bobbing but without stopping. Eventually I either switch sides or take her off completely depending on if she's eaten from both sides or not. In between sides or after she's done she has started to cry hard, tears and all. If we are switching sides she is frantic to get back on. Burping her is useless because she get's so upset it is difficult. Eventually she will either stop or I have to distract her with something.

I thought that maybe she was still hungry so I've been giving her her rice cereal/purees more often than just practicing eating in addition to breast feeding. She downs every bite I give her. It doesn't matter if I give her the food before or after breast feeding she still gets upset when she's done.

Do you think she's just comfort nursing every session (do they still do that at this age?), a long growth spurt, or do you think I'm not producing enough for her?

Re: DD getting very upset after eating

  • My baby did very similar actions as yours at that age/still does sometimes. I have nothing though that will help. I cannot wait to be done breastfeeding is all I got. Hate it because of all the stress, along with not pumping enough to keep up while at work. If you find something out please PM me, I am dying to hear.

  • My DD does this (altho we have not introduced solids).  I think its because she is mad that she isn't getting as much milk per suck as she does on the bottle.  I think she has become lazy and frustrated and I am slowly producing less milk so I think my bfing days may be coming to an end.  The only way I have found to combat this is having our nursing sessions in bed, when she gets sleepy.  I wish you luck.

  • Micah did the same thing around that age. He did it every time I nursed him during the day but was fine at night. Eventually, he started doing it less and less, and now it's pretty rare for him to freak out like that. He still nurses on both sides (always has), and he does get antsy if it takes too long to switch sides, but he no longer screams at the end.

Also realize that just because she's going after food, it doesn't mean that she's hungry. She can't yet understand that the solid food your giving her is filling up her tummy. Micah will ravenously bite into any food I give him, but only to fulfill his oral fixation, not his hunger.

Hang in there. If you're worried about how much she's getting, then have her weighed weekly to see if she's gaining enough. Micah's weight gain did slow down a lot right around the 5 months mark, too. And yes, Micah still comfort nurses.
