Natural Birth

Arnica during and after labor

Hi ladies!  Just wondering if any of you have experience using Arnica during and after labor.  I'm 34 weeks pregnant and want to go as natural as possible, and honestly, the thought of using Arnica literally just popped into my mind as a possibility.  Obviously I'm going to do my research and talk to my doctor about it, but I wanted to see if any of you have experience using it during and after labor and wouldn't mind sharing your thoughts!

Thanks!

  • Yes, I used both pill form and gel form. The gel worked great for my hematoma (sp?) and the pill form was great for body aches and such. I'd definitely get it.

  • I used it after delivery and I really think it helped me out. Love that stuff!

  • My midwife usually pours arnica oil on as she's doing a massage and then gives tabs after the baby is born.
  • Wow, this never occurred to me. I have arnica tabs I keep in my purse but haven't used them since I got pregnant. What dosage do people recommend? The basic dosage that's on my little bottle? And it's safe for breastfeeding? Seriously. How did I not think of this sooner?

  • I used some form of it (they were little balls that dissolve in water?) that my OB suggested during labor.  I honestly can't say if it helped or not, but it's certainly worth a shot!

  • My doctor recommended sitz baths with arnica, chamomile and rosemary, she said it would increase speed of scarring/healing after my episiotomy. I live in Mexico, so I bought all those herbs at the local market for under $1, but I bet you could find arnica flowers in the states too (I honestly had only come across it in cream or tab form before, I had no idea what the herb would actually look like). The sitz baths were really soothing (I put the herbs in a mesh laundry bag and in the bath like a giant tea bag), I'd highly recommend it if you can try it.
  • The birth center we went to gave all post-delivery moms a sitz bath with some arnica in it and a couple of arnica pills after delivery to keep swelling down. I think it worked, but not sure. We use it at home and I didn't think about using it before/during labor.
