STM+ what do you do for daytime babysitting?

So I have an U/S next wednesday and I really want DH to come and would love to not drag my kids along but I just have no options for daytime sitters on Wednesdays (which is the only day that my office does U/S).  It was great because all summer I was using the teenage girl next door but she is obviously back to school now.  My Godmother (who is retired and lives 40 minutes away) is usually gracious enough to help me out when I need it mid-week but she has a volunteer job every wednesday.

Just wondering what  you ladies do during the day mid-week if you dont have family in the area.

  • I have 3 local SAHM friends.

Yeah, thats what I need.  We moved here last October and I still have not become too close to any Moms yet around here.

  • I have no one. Conveniently no one is ever available when I need a sitter even though I have many SAHM friends. Oh well. If I can't bring DS then I don't go. ;)

  • I usually don't actually rely on them, I feel bad about it even though I'd always gladly return the favor, and I take the girls with me.  However, they're always there for me in a pinch.  My childcare for when I am in the hospital fell through, damn MIL, and they've sworn that I am not to worry they'll handle my kids.

  • can you see if you can find any daycare centers that you can use on an hourly basis?  or maybe you can find a college kid who can help out during the day between classes?

  • We had to take DS to one of our u/s appointments. DH doesn't go in with me at the beginning of the appointment when the doctor is doing all the measurements and stuff, but they call him in for the last bit when they are showing us the baby. Things around here are really impersonal anyway, so it's not like the doctor is chatting away about the baby while they're doing their thing. So DH doesn't miss anything at all, really. It's not ideal, but I would hate for him to miss seeing the baby.

  • How old are your other kids? DD is almost 3 and we take her to my OB and MFM appointments. They usually have her help check the babies heartbeat with the doppler and then she gets to see the u/s with us at the MFM appt. We just make sure to have snacks and my iPhone accessible to DD in case she gets bored. My doctors have never been bothered by this and actually like that we bring her.

  • They are 2 and 4.  My MWs have zero issue with my kids being there but it just complicates things because I can't just relax and focus on the baby on the screen (nor can DH) when are kids are being....well, boys.  They are not tyrants or anything, but they are toddler boys and they tend to rough house sometimes inappropriately and the little one likes to get into everything and push any button he can find, etc.  It just makes things more difficult.  Unfortunately, this is probably the route we will be taking, but I would have preferred to avoid it if possible.

  • Do you have any drop-in daycare places? For the hour or so that you're gone, your kiddos might like that.

We have one in our mall that is licensed, clean, and the workers are all college students, so I'm often tempted to get their numbers for babysitting also.  I've only used it once, but it went well.

  • Similar to pp, I've taken DS with me to some of my OB appts. It's never a problem as long as I'm prepared with snacks, toys, etc. I also bring the stroller to contain him while the OB does her exam. If not, he'd be all over the room.

  • Fortunately we moved up north, so we live 10-15 minutes from my in laws. Can you ask someone from your mom's group to watch the boys?  I'm always seeing posts on the mom's group FB page about moms needing a sitter.  There is always someone willing to help out.

  • I've had similar issues.  I usually depend on DH to watch DS if I need to do something during the day since he works from home.  But if we both need to be somewhere, I used to ask a SAHM friend, but she recently had a baby so she can't really do it anymore.  DH's mom lives an hour away and is usually willing and able to help out in the afternoons.  Otherwise, I have tried friends' babysitters.  My SAHM friend has a babysitter that has some daytime availability so she's my fallback.  Another friend's nanny also has some daytime availability.  But we're pretty limited in our options.

  • We have a babysitting co-op where we don't exchange money, just children. I can elaborate if you want more info. It's really great.

  • Maybe a mothers day out kind of program at a local church? There's a lot of those where we live and it's typically one or two mornings a week and you can send your kids very occasionally and pay by day or have a standing "reservation" to take your kids every week kind of like daycare.
