tomatos not in fridge

So this isn't really a baby question but I thought some moms who are foodies could answer this. I was reading an article in Parent magazine that said it is best to keep tomatoes out of fridge to keep them fresh. Is this true? What about in the hotter months? I have always refrigerated but now that I think about it they are left out in the store.

Re: tomatos not in fridge

  • I had the same thoughts previously, but they are kept at room temperature at the store so I guess that is the best.

  • Best to keep them at room temp. My mom always kept them on a window sill above the kitchen sink, so that's where I keep them, too. And upside down, though I have no idea why :)

  • It's better to keep them out (not in the fridge). It helps with the flavor and helps them from becoming mealy. That said, they ripen way more quickly if not in the fridge, so if you don't eat them they will go rotten more quickly if left out. So choose your battle :)
  • I agree with all of the above. And upside down outside of the fridge is to help prevent bruising, the top is more firm from the stem, etc.

  • They tend to get really grainy if you put them in the fridge. Keeping them at room temps helps preserve the quality in taste but they also ripen quicker.

  • This is the first year that I didn't grow my own but, if I buy them, I only buy a couple at a time unless I need them for a recipe.  Growing up, they were always left on the window sill in our house - likewise in mine - upside down.  As pp said, it is to keep them from bruising andto ripen them further by the sun.  I love a fresh warm (preferably freshly picked) tomato - with mozzarella, basil and balsamic or between two pieces of fresh italian bread with mayo!  YUM

  • Do you do this with little grape/cherry tomatoes too?

  • Ick, tomatoes stored in the fridge are nasty!

Definitely always store on the counter.  They'll not last a week (unless they were under-ripe to begin with), but they will taste far, far better.

  • Everyone is right, but I would add that to prevent over-ripening and losing them, if you pop them in the fridge once they're ripe, that'll stop the ripening process and they'll be fine (not mealy) for a day or two in there.

  • I used to be a grocery store manager so know most of the produce tricks :)

    Refrigerating tomatoes makes them grainy.
