*Auntie* opinion please :)

Hi there, I left a message on this board a couple months ago about my 7 year old son being diagnosed with adhd/low functioning autism. You gave me some incredible advice and information that I'm still trying to break down to this day bc its still sort of new to me. My son is doing well on the Adderall, his teacher is sooo pleased with him! I almost cried when I saw the school work he's been doing.

My question is since him being back to school hes taking his medication earlier in the day so its wearing off earlier in the evening, maybe around 6-7pm (if I'm lucky) the poor child just cannot for the life of him fall asleep before 10-11pm every night. Hes not even really hyper, he just can't close his eyes and drift off even when they're all glossed over and red and he clearly looks ready for bed. I went to the health food store to get him Melatonin..they didn't have a specific kind for kids and the instructions were to give a dropper full to an adult. My son weighs 64lbs and i don't want him sick of course. I'm sure the drug store has this in strips? Is there a brand you would say is good?

I'm sorry I'm not even paying you for this lol but the lady at the health food store got real snooty once i said my son was on medication and the first thing i thought was 'get me out of here!' and to ask you about it..I'm also trying to find out what herbals should NOT be taken with adderall. She tried to give me another 'medication' for calming children but I really don't know about the interactions so I do plan on asking his pediatrician but we don't go there til next week and my poor kid needs to sleep. I really do appreciate the time you take to answer these, thanks so much!!

  • I'm not Auntie, but I do have two kids taking melatonin.  My 6 year old has taken as much as 3 mg at a time, and has now weaned down to 1 mg before bed.  My 3 year old takes 1 mg, but also take alprozolam every night for his sleep disorder.  Our sleep specialist told us he has kids that he sees that take up to 8 mg per night.

FWIW, we have had the best luck with the Source Naturals, orange flavored tablets.  We get them for the Vitamin Shop.

  • Thank you so much, both of you for your answers. I am going to wait it out until we go to his next appt I think and I will ask her what she thinks..I was talking to my mum about it and she suggested the splitting of the medication as well throughout the day. He's on 10mg XR so I'm not sure if giving a 5 at breakfast then the other 5 around 1 after their second nutritional break would help? I'm just worried hes going to crash from being so tired, like he will get sick and not be able to feel better for a while. Guess we'll just wait and see..
